Elon - Game Thread

Supposedly, smaller teams should have given Gettys bigger problems, no? Those teams get out and run and should wear him down, theoretically. Last night I saw him sprint 94 feet to get a huge offensive putback. For a guy who has been ripped on far too much, he's clearly been putting in the work to improve his game.

I agree and disagree.

You're absolutely right, IMO, that Gettys should see some time on the court as a 7-footer. I think the point of contention was him starting.

With the understanding of Coach's lineups that most players only see about 15 min of court time that's less of an issue aside from prior to last night's games, Gettys has been a statistical nightmare for us.

On the slight point of disagreement here is that I don't think any of our players, regardless of our fan stance should be above criticism. In the same sense we often question coaching, strategies, etc. We are fans and this is our "place" to do that where it shouldn't negatively affect the team. They should also know we care about them and cheer their successes. For example, my posts above praising Gettys play last night. When the players deserve it, I'll give it to them. I won't shield them from positive or negative. It wouldn't be fair to do so.

So, if you look at Gettys' stats prior to last night I don't believe he was being ripped on too much looking at the results. Now, he needs to build on last night's game, and I believe he can.

You have to factor in his 0 playing time the first 2+ months of the season as part of his "slow start". I think the last 2 games he's earned that right to start and get significant minutes. I'm not sure what's going on with Chuck, but right now Gettys and Marcus are our only viable 5's.

Four blocked shots and causing numerous altered shots against NE, to me, more than made up for CJ's lack of scoring. Nobody else on the team was stopping them inside.

Another reason for Keatts starting who he does is there are certain players he doesn't want to get in early foul trouble that could limit their abilities down the stretch. Flemmings is one of those guys. And I still think he is the biggest key to our success.

To me he doesn't need to score in that situation, just be a threat to score. Or at least be capable of catching that high post pass to make a move or kick.

CJG isn't a threat outside the charging zone. His only game is literally under the basket, and that's iffy against good post defenders. He is also a liability in securing rebounds. He tends to get a hand on the ball due to his height, but because he can't grab the rebound it ends up being up for grabs. He wasn't much of a threat last year, and he seems some what better in blocking shots without fouling this year. That's the only improvement I've seen.

I hope I can get on the Gettys bandwagon, but decent play against Delaware and Elon isn't impressive. If he can regularly produce against W&M, Towson, NU, JMU, Hofstra, CofC or even Drexel i'll be the first to admit i'm wrong.

W&M on deck. Let's see what we/he can do....

RE: Elon - Game Thread
I don't think there is a bandwagon to get on. Gettys is, and will continue to be, a roll player. We have plenty of guys who have been recruited as scorers. Some have not met those expectations. But I do believe that they still will. This team, as a whole, has not played many games together. The team has not been consistent to this point. They have shown me enough to believe they can be very good. And I'm hoping they are on the verge of stepping it up game in, game out. Gettys is not a take over kind of player. I see Flemmings and the other CJ as being that. But Gettys creates certain problems for the opposition that nobody else in the team can. Ogbodo has lost confidence for some reason. He showed so much promise the beginning of the season. I hope he gets that swag back. And as far as starters, I think it was Brownell who told us, "it's not who starts, but who finishes that counts."

I could have the wrong coach.

All of y'all talking about CJ Gettys not being able to catch the ball haven't been watching the games lately too close. Homeboy has shown excellent hands/coordination lately and has been good. Yes, I would also love to have an excited Ogbodo back in the mix. That's a good tandem if they play it right!

Key word Bill is lately. I said it on the Wand M thread I'm on board now. His last three games have been very good. Prior to that he hadn't shown much offensively to me. I'm relying heavily on the NE game because I was there.
