They will never be a legit AAC candidate until, they get thier football program turned around and invest in a viable on campus stadium. UMass seems to want to do everything on the cheap---there are teams on this board with far better facilities and stronger programs than UMass. I'm not sure that program can survive at its current level of investment as an indy in the current landscape.

UMASS completed a $35 million dollar state of the art football training center in 2014. They have an on-campus stadium that seats 17,000 and they have the Pats stadium in Foxborough for larger crowds. It is not a perfect set-up, but it has gotten them home games against a number of P5 schools and they have a future four game home-and-home series with BYU.

They can worry about being a legit AAC candidate when there is an opening. In the meantime, they can schedule a game at South Carolina in 2016 that pays $1.5 million and as a bonus gets a home-and-home basketball game with South Carolina. Or get $1 million to play at Notre Dame on NBC. It is not easy to get on the Notre Dame schedule. UMASS has done a great job of scheduling. They are going to survive as an indy.

Playing in Foxboro has hurt them but it helps going forward.
They have scheduled two four game series with U Conn and BC for Gillette .
When they expand the home stadium to 24k they will have a nice set up .

That one sounds like a two for one which is fine.
Bringing a team like UCLA to the beach will be huge for Coastal.

Would be great to have them here but we are thinking it is a one and done. Money game in LA in exchange for some cash.

UCLA is different. They don't play two for ones and they don't play FCS schools. They like to play home-and-home games with G5 schools. They do some money games, but nothing like SEC schools and they don't pay as well.

If this happens, it would be a great opportunity for Coastal to play at the Rose Bowl. That is a great place to watch and play a football game. Coastal must have a connection in the UCLA athletic department if they get this game.

Not a rumor - I've confirmed it with my usual sources. It's not a two-for-one, it's just a one-off trip out to the Rose Bowl.

Good point, after the fiasco's that are Memphis, South Florida and Temple with their playing off-campus, no way that conference would ever consider a school that plays off-campus.

Does that off-campus theory apply to UTSA? Did you realize that there are 26 FBS schools or about 20% of FBS schools that don't have an on-campus stadium? I don't see why Memphis should be worried about an on-campus stadium when they averaged over 43,000 in the Liberty Bowl just a few miles from campus. Plus, UMASS does have an on-campus stadium.

Just a minor addition...

Based on the linked article, the $34.5 million included the performance center, new press box, and new playing field. Even so, they all look like great additions. UMass still kicked the can down the road on getting McGuirk ADA compliant.

One thing that is not mentioned in the above article is the $28.5 million Champions Center, a new basketball training and locker room facility.

Back to the topic, scheduling the Home & Home sounds like a win/win. Did the announcement mention the site of the UMass home game (Gillette in Foxboro or McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst (Hadley))?

Seriously considering a trip to Coastal. The return game in 2018 will be on campus and McGuirk straddles both towns.

I think that's a nice 1-1 pick up for us, especially as a program brand new to FBS.

Congrats. Should be a winnable FBS game for you guys!

Got to give UMass full credit, they did a pretty good job scheduling despite being an independent. Picked up the other independent in BYU, and 4 games against Newly promoted teams who would be looking for games.

Schedule wise, looks like UMass will get to open CCU's expanded stadium.
