RE: OT: Star Wars Thread [Warning: Spoilers]
Just don't feel that way. Personally feel like its easier to find negatives in anything than positive. Always going to try to compare it to something else and if it didn't meet those expectations its a bust. I'm going to watch it again today and I'll see if anything change for me

RE: OT: Star Wars Thread [Warning: Spoilers]
I've seen it three times. Twice in IMAX.

My thoughts have been made pretty concrete now. It's a great movie, but not a very good Star Wars film.

It completely rejects the path setup by The Force Awakens not only in the mysteries it decides to let go but also by ignoring entire plot threads. It is as if the events of The Force Awakens never occurred.

In addition, it feels like a finale to a trilogy, not the critical turning point leading into a final film. I imagine there will be a pretty big time jump between this movie and Episode IX which will be strange considering the first two were so close together. And if it doesn't, what sort of story do they hope to tell by the end of this trilogy?

I liked Episode VII enough...but I gave it a pass because I felt Episode VIII would make it a better film and we'd look back and appreciate what they setup. The Last Jedi actually makes The Force Awakens worse.

They should have made this a side-series and not part of the main episodes. Nothing I've seen so far makes me think this is a trilogy sequel designed to finish out the first two trilogies. Instead, it feels like fan-fiction. It's a three-movie setup for a 4th trilogy without the Skywalkers.

Exactly! I think the the people that like this film are looking at it as more of a standalone than part of a series. If none of the other find existed, I would think this is a pretty cool movie.

RE: OT: Star Wars Thread [Warning: Spoilers]
I saw it last night and I can't say I hated it, but I can't say I loved it either. I think my expectations were too high going in.

The one death that made me sad is for... Admiral Ackbar. (and yes, the title of the thread has a spoiler warning so I don't want to hear about it if you haven't seen it yet 04-cheers)

RE: OT: Star Wars Thread [Warning: Spoilers]
Found it odd how they made up so many female characters to look so worn (Laura Dern, her huge-nosed sidekick, Lysa Arryn from Game of Thrones). People looking like actual people is good, but this seemed almost cartoonish.

The whole Laura Dern suicide run seemed kind of stupid: they have robots for that. Could have let C3PO go out in a blaze of glory. And all she did when she was alone was stare out the window at her friends blowing up.

Admiral Ackbar deserved more than a throwaway line.

I actually liked a lot of it: Luke was good (I liked the "reach out" scene), Rey is way better in this movie than she was as girl-Luke from the last movie, heroes should fail sometimes and not everyone gets redeemed (the whole Finn sideplot). Fish-nuns good, penguinoids bad.

Ha, I thought the exact same thing. He's just a bit player now anyway. Send him off with his last words being "Oh, dear!".

The more this peels back the more these scenes show just how dumb they were. This one with Dern, the Leia floating through space and the what are we calling these projections (astral? is that what it is?) were just a bit too much for me. I enjoyed the film mostly, but Johnson took some ill advised liberties that brought the value of the film down.

I'm trying to balance those with the fact that as a kid and then as I grew up expecting that I would never get the prequel and that I would never get any Star Wars at all ever again. And now to have had six additional films, Rebels, the Clone Wars series, the promise of more spinoff movies, etc. I would probably be content if a monkey directed them.

Agreed and if that was her move, why didn't she do it sooner. Would have saved more escape pods.

Also agreed that C3PO could have done it. On a side note, I am a big fan of BB8.

Fish-nuns were one of the highlights of the film for me, to be honest.

I love Star Wars: the golden age of science fiction is 12, and I was 12 when Star Wars (not this "New Hope" ********, but Star Wars) came out in the theater, and Han shot first, and the backgrounds weren't crowded with extra robots and animals.

For the kamikaze scene to work, you need to care about the character. Laura Dern's admiral was poorly written and woodenly acted; I didn't miss her when she blew up.

Han didn't shoot first. Saying "Han shot first" implies that there was ever a shot in response. There wasn't.

"Han shot".

I really liked it. There were some major plot holes, but pretty much every movie these days has major plot holes, just Star Wars is criticized harder than others for them.

I do wish they would just get someone to look over things for said plot holes. If many in the audience can easily see them I don't understand why Holly Wood keep missing them.

I will say that the end of Empire Strikes Back we knew who Han, Leia and Like where and what the stakes were going forward. I am not sure I know who Rey, Finn and Poe are or what the big stakes are for 9.

Or even better Ackbar. That's how he should have gone out. The whole not telling the rest of the crew the plan was just thin manufactured drama... and stupid.

RE: OT: Star Wars Thread [Warning: Spoilers]
My problem with this movie is you could tell that it was built / written around scenes; not story. They had these great ideas for kick ass scenes (and they were kick ass) BUT everything else in the script was designed to get to those scenes; not to tell a story. There were entire plot lines that made no difference in the outcome in any way.

"Han shot".

No, the use of "first" in this instance is not correlative, and therefore is correct. See Strunk&White.

"Han shot first."

"Ackbar deserved a better end."

The Last Jedi sucked. I wrote an entire rant over in the Sport Bar all about why it was terrible. Rian Johnson should be banned from ever directing another film. 03-hissyfit

Just saw this little tidbit about the upcoming Anthology movie
SOLO: A Star Wars Story (due date May 25,2018)

link: https://www.yahoo.com/news/famous-millen...00008.html

excerpt:

On Friday, multiple outlets reported that photos from forthcoming Star Wars Lego sets have confirmed that the Falcon will sport a new look in Solo. But, the more relevant piece of information was the fact that this particular earlier version of the spice freighter is being called “Kessel Run Millennium Falcon,” which means something Han mentioned about A New Hope, and caused headaches for real astrophysicists, will finally be depicted.

What is the Kessel Run? In old Star Wars canon, it was a specific hyperspace route used by smugglers to get “spice” from Kessel. How the Falcon was able to do this “faster” than other ships remains to be seen. But, because in real life parsecs are a measurement of distance, rather than time, it’s possible some space/time actual sci-fi explanation might finally explain what the hell Han was talking about....

Still waiting a bit to see Last Jedi, so dancin' around this thread until then.

It will be interesting to see if Disney scoops up some of the Legends-era canon regarding Kessel or if they do their own thing.
