RE: ODU Basketball Game
Last night was a very important win for our good guys, lifting our record to 5-2 (instead of 4-3) going into a tough assignments at UVA.
The way we won it was important:
*On a remarkable evening in which we didn't hit a three-pointer for the first time in ten years, we put it to ODU in the paint, outscoring them 32-16, including 12-0 in the final minutes.
*We played very good, tough, gritty defense for almost forty minutes, for the most part forcing ODU into tough shots all night long. Our length came into play all night.
*Omar took over the game in the final ten minutes, scoring fifteen points, all on strong drives using both hands or quick pop-up, sometimes off-balance jumpers. ODU knew what he was going to do and could not stop him. He also played the best defensive game I've seen him play at W&M, with seven rebounds and several blocked shots and a steal, shutting down his man almost all night.
*Tarpey is a warrior. No points for 38 minutes, then seven in crunch time on tough, physical drives.
His usual game of blocked shots, steal and rebounds continued despite the scoring drought. I hope everyone watching him this season, his final one for the Tribe, appreciates the kind of player Terry is
night after night.
*Malinowski continues to impress as his game improves almost every game. He's very smooth on the court,
knows game situations, plays good defense, and, almost invisibly, contributes points, rebounds, steals
*Sheldon bounced back after his Howard debacle with a very good game on both sides of the ball. He outplayed ODU almost all night long in the paint and was very good walling off defenders in the final minutes for Omar and Terry's key drives.
It's always very satisfying, shall I say---sweet, to beat ODU. The ODU fandom revels in some Arabian Nights fantasy about how great they and their programs are, and solid wins like last night really antagonize them.
