RE: ODU Basketball Game
Went from 2 for 10 from the floor, to 4 for their last 4, and 3-3 from FT line. Their timing was good.

RE: ODU Basketball Game
Never in a million years did I think we would win a game while shooting 0% from 3. Unbelievable!

RE: ODU Basketball Game
ODU isn't very good. Good win, but they aren't a lot better than Hampton or Howard. Not a good season ahead for Jeff Jones. If I'm wrong, I'll be surprised.

Plus now we will have to shoot 60% against UVA to get back to our average.....

I mean, regression to the mean is a thing. Though it will likely happen in a game other than that one because the basketball gods aren't quite that kind.

I can dream for a few days. UVA up 3 with 10 minutes to go.

Way to drop ODU and even hold off until the end to make it exciting.

Great win! I never thought we could shoot 38% from the floor, make no 3's and still beat ODU. I'm encouraged by our going to the hoop successfully. The 3's will start to fall and coupled with the drives, backdoors and cuts, we should be fine.

RE: ODU Basketball Game
So sweet to get a win against odu especially since we shot so uncharacteristically. The history of this series has seen The Tribe losing so many close games against them, nice for us to pull one out.
Time to celebrate with a single malt.

RE: ODU Basketball Game
It's easy to look at the score and say the game was ugly, but defensively it was well played on both ends. Refs missed about 20 calls on ODU (and at least some on us) but ODU was determined to make us beat them 2 at a time. I would have liked to see us post Dixon and Omar more than we did to take advantage of mismatches, but we were so aggressive driving the ball that it didn't matter. If we attack the basket like that we'll win most of our games, even if we go through dry stretches or bad calls. Omar forced the refs to make calls by being aggressive and not getting ridden off his drive with little bumps.

Edit: ODU was missing some interior players due to injury, right? I thought I heard that on the pregame.

RE: ODU Basketball Game
Good win, ODU played good D and challenged our shooters so give them credit. ODU is on a bad streak of losing 4 in a row (against ranked Purdue, St Joe's and VCU prior to us). Think Jeff Jones will get them on track in league play and this win will help our RPI.

It's also nice to win a close one after dropping the only other two games that were close at the end.

Their best forward, Brandon Stith, is out with an injury.

THANK YOU TRIBE!!!

I just got something that I ask for every Christmas, a win over odu. Reading the Virginian Pilot (which is nothing more than a glorified odu newspaper) in the morning is going to make my shredded wheat taste better!!

It's nice what hitting free throws does for you down the stretch.

RE: ODU Basketball Game
Last night was a very important win for our good guys, lifting our record to 5-2 (instead of 4-3) going into a tough assignments at UVA.

The way we won it was important:

*On a remarkable evening in which we didn't hit a three-pointer for the first time in ten years, we put it to ODU in the paint, outscoring them 32-16, including 12-0 in the final minutes.

*We played very good, tough, gritty defense for almost forty minutes, for the most part forcing ODU into tough shots all night long. Our length came into play all night.

*Omar took over the game in the final ten minutes, scoring fifteen points, all on strong drives using both hands or quick pop-up, sometimes off-balance jumpers. ODU knew what he was going to do and could not stop him. He also played the best defensive game I've seen him play at W&M, with seven rebounds and several blocked shots and a steal, shutting down his man almost all night.

*Tarpey is a warrior. No points for 38 minutes, then seven in crunch time on tough, physical drives.
His usual game of blocked shots, steal and rebounds continued despite the scoring drought. I hope everyone watching him this season, his final one for the Tribe, appreciates the kind of player Terry is
night after night.

*Malinowski continues to impress as his game improves almost every game. He's very smooth on the court,
knows game situations, plays good defense, and, almost invisibly, contributes points, rebounds, steals

*Sheldon bounced back after his Howard debacle with a very good game on both sides of the ball. He outplayed ODU almost all night long in the paint and was very good walling off defenders in the final minutes for Omar and Terry's key drives.

It's always very satisfying, shall I say---sweet, to beat ODU. The ODU fandom revels in some Arabian Nights fantasy about how great they and their programs are, and solid wins like last night really antagonize them.

RE: ODU Basketball Game
Some quick observations:

1. ODU's defense was good. For the most part, though, we moved the ball well and got off good shots. They just did not fall. There were only a few of those 15 three point attempts that were rushed or desperate.

2. As shots weren't falling, we got really tentative from outside. Nobody wanted to take a shot and we ended up with one, two, or three too many passes.

3. Good coaching to take it inside. And Omar responded!

4. The new rules have changed the way we play. We are looking to draw fouls on drives. Shaver was working the refs early--reminding them of the "new rules."

5. It seemed that Whitman got a lot of minutes. I just checked: Sheldon 27, Whitman 14

6. Interesting substitutions. There were times we only had two starters on the court.

7. Why isn't Tot getting any court time? Is his ankle still an issue?

This was an impressive win. As we have said before, we lose this game in many of the years past.

RE: ODU Basketball Game
I agree Sean looked really good at times, but he needs to finish stronger and not let then knock the ball away. Jack looks less than 100% to me, he only used his right arm on offense and his left ever time on defense.
