I wonder this myself. It looked like Schlottman had some tough moments last night. He seemed hesitant and rushed on the few shots he did take and had a couple bad defensive possessions.

1. ODU's defense was good. For the most part, though, we moved the ball well and got off good shots. They just did not fall. There were only a few of those 15 three point attempts that were rushed or desperate.

2. As shots weren't falling, we got really tentative from outside. Nobody wanted to take a shot and we ended up with one, two, or three too many passes.

3. Good coaching to take it inside. And Omar responded!

4. The new rules have changed the way we play. We are looking to draw fouls on drives. Shaver was working the refs early--reminding them of the "new rules."

5. It seemed that Whitman got a lot of minutes. I just checked: Sheldon 27, Whitman 14

6. Interesting substitutions. There were times we only had two starters on the court.

7. Why isn't Tot getting any court time? Is his ankle still an issue?

This was an impressive win. As we have said before, we lose this game in many of the years past.

ODU may be the best defense we see all year, on the broadcast I think I heard Charlie say ODU only shot higher than 40% in the game against VCU. They win by smothering defense and offensive rebounding. I agree that we responded well, just couldn't get shots to fall.

On the substitutions, it really seems like you have Schlotman and Cohn at point, and the Sheldon/Whitman/Seacat trio down low; the other three positions are mix and match. Malinowski seems much improved, including a couple of great drives last night; these may be getting him more minutes. Part of me wonders if the substitutions were to find who had the hot hand last night...no one seemed to until Omar in the last 10 minutes though!

RE: ODU Basketball Game
The key substitution seems to be that no one plays much more than than 30 minutes. There are key moments in the game that we have only one or two starters on the floor.

Remember the Richmond game (last year?) where Marcus single-handedly kept us in the game for 35+ minutes? Then he got gassed and we lost. Contrast that with last night when Prewitt, over the last 10 minutes, and Tarpey, over the last two, took control. Their legs were fresh.

This should help us with the Thursday-Saturday quick turnaround schedule during the regular season and in the tournament.

(I did not see and have no explanation at all for the collapse at Howard.)

Re; Tot. I believe Tony mentioned a few games back that Olliver's injury was still lingering and that every time he played full speed, he ran the risk of reinjury [ or some such words]. I believe, if and when, Tot does get back to 100%, he will replace Scholtman in the rotation.

Congratulations Tribe. Was quite the ugly game to watch, and I left the arena very upset. But credit to your team, they found the formula in the last quarter of the game and rode it to victory.

The game wasn't really "ugly" to watch - just different, like before the three point shot ever existed.

I think teams shot >30% before the 3-pointer. First half was definitely ugly.

Like I tweeted after the Duquesne game, "Ugly wins need love, too."

RE: ODU Basketball Game
Props to the student section! I actually think they affected ODU's foul shooting when they were on their end during the second half. The crowd seemed to pick up on their energy the last four minutes and I think it influenced the play of both sides. Nice job Tribe!

ODU Basketball Game
I do think we got a glimpse of the atmosphere we could have in Kaplan. With such a close, hard fought game I have to imagine the home atmosphere has to help.

RE: ODU Basketball Game
I'm just happy that W&M won a game with their defense. Maybe they've learned a hard lesson or two from last season.

+1. Right now, Tarpey, Omar, and Dixon are averaging right around 30 mpg. I thought that might be skewed by some early season games, but even in the blowouts those guys are 25-28. Cohn and Sheldon are around 24-25, Malinowski around 19.

Interesting note: we've scored 262 points in the first half, and 262 in the second half. We've held opponents to 197 in the first half, but given up 253 in the second.

It wasn't just the student section - the whole place was rocking when the Tribe started to make a move and grabbed the lead for good. I WAS surprised at the small number of ODU fans in attendence. I can remember other W&M/ODU games in he Kap when Tribe fans were outnumbered.

That's right. I believe we've also won 3 in a row against ODU at the Kap.
