I'm thinking that a Memphis made rumor. I just don't see the draw. Anderson ain't about money....as far as the minimal increase Memphis would afford him. If he moves, it'll be a big school
So a million+ more a year is minimal?
Memphis's coach made 1.4 last year with a bonus of 235k
Blake Anderson made $700,000
It's ALWAYS about the money
I believe Blake Anderson has a sliding buyout that started at 3mil but drops a million after two years of coaching at ASU and drops to 1 million after 3 or 4 years
Malzahn was $850,00 at A-State in 2011. Just because we pay Anderson $700,000 doesn't mean its the most we can pay. Anderson didn't have Malzahn's cred and started at less.
If our max in 2011 was $850,000 it is assuredly more than that now.
There becomes a point where the risk out weights the reward in paying a football coach at our level (I feel this way about Western and Brohm also) . Even if one of our schools agrees to pay the max we can afford it will be 1.5 to 2 million. At that not one of us can really afford it but if we did...
it's still not enough to keep that coach at ASU/WKU if someone wants him
But what it does is puts us at risk of having no choice but keeping the coach if he happens to lose and lose...till it sets the program back 5 years. NONE of us can afford a set back like that..after winning.
That type of money is also going to limit the amount we can afford to pay other coaches like basketball (for Western) or the OC/DC. Everytime I see a school over spend on coach thinking they will keep him..
It reminds me of S. Ill in basketball. It's taking them almost 10 years to recover from a stupid mistake of locking in a basketball coach to a big contract with a huge buyout for the school...
they couldn't afford it so they waited 2 or 3 years longer than they probably would have to buy him out. The sad thing is they gave him the contract because he won..with another coaches talent. They didn't wait to see if he could do it with his own players.
We are having this same topic with Brohm ...it's been said Western has a big donor(s) will to pay up in the mid 2 million range. As a fan I want Brohm at Western forever. But not if it puts us at risk and not just football. I think it's safe to say none of us have many donors waiting in line to put out 2 million a year for our schools. So while it sounds great someone is willing to step up like that....
I think it also limits future big donations while this contract is being paid. But if you kept a coach that can win 9+ games each year and play for conference championships... that in itself will bring in more donations. Not the 2mil range but people donate more whe you are winning. So I see both sides. I just don't think it's worth the risk
