I'm hoping that W&M, Richmond and JMU all finish 9-2.

Overwhelming defense against what had been a very effective Hampton offense...remember, this Hampton team almost defeated Richmond and and had scored lots of points. Our line penetrated all day long.

Dedmon has some sort of rib injury )re Jimmye on post-game tv on our web page). He is perhaps the most exciting player we've had since "Pinball" Michael Clemsons and a threat to score every time he touches the ball. We need him for JMU.

Jack Armstrong, the "All-American Boy" (an old popular radio kids broadcast for those who don't know--look it up on the web)), showed some speed and deception. Just a redshirt frosh, our All-American boy will be a contributor.

Richmond had 720 yards offense vs JMU yesterday (yes, 720 yards!!!) including 350 on the ground. Run the ball down their throat and control the clock.

Sellout yesterday and very noisy crowd into the game. Nice to see student section packed.
A grand day at old Zable for sure.

I felt line play was the difference between JMU and Richmond. If our big guys play the way they are capable of and have, Halloween should be a treat for the Tribe.

Yep. Control the LOS. Hoping Kendall has a big game, in the presser they asked him about the fumble after the big run and he said he was watching the jumbotron. JL was looking away and had no comment. Like confessing to the neighbor that you threw a ball through his window while your dad stands beside you...........

You know what, that young man showed character in the presser. No talking around it, no minimizing, no excuses...just manned up. 0% chance he'll make that mistake again.

Yep. I was surprised he was put out there for the press. Obviously, he was willing to be there and have to field the question he knew would be coming.

I think the coaches put him out there precisely for that reason...to build character. The only part I'd quibble with is calling our scoreboard a jumbotron.

Guys stepped up when the guy ahead went down, showing the team has some depth. Harvey had a very disruptive game. Fetters did a great job at MLB. Lubnow continues to play well. The D line, R Smith, Dykes on the corner all played outstanding. RS Freshman Armstrong will be needed next week. He showed he can make plays, we will need play makers vs JMU. The injuries at that position are such that they may be cleared to play, but one hit could change that.

A heavy dose of Mikal and Kendall, win the line of scrimmage, big home crowd and we could be celebrating. Keep the momentum going boys! Go Tribe!

RE: Hampton
Not sure how many of you saw this, but here is what happened as the players came out of the locker room before the second half. Anderson's mother came out of the stands and called her son over to the fence, and he obliged. Big grin on his face. His mother spoke with him briefly, and then, I kid you not, she began beating him with an open hand on the head and shoulder pads. Hard. Loudly yelling at him. Kendall tried to keep smiling and acted like it was no big deal, but his mom was clearly not joking. She then grabbed his jersey in one hand and angrily pointed toward the Tribe bench with the other, while continuing to yell. The smile left Anderson's face and he ran off to join his team. His mother turned around and headed back for the stands. I was going to ask her what that was all about, but the look on her face scared the crap out of me, so I decided otherwise.

Wow!

I'm guessing it was something like "You worked too hard to get to the goal line - Don't drop the ball again until you cross the goal line son!".

You gotta love parents who are willing to be honest with their kids and tell them what they need to hear. It shows she cares about him. The world needs more parents like Kendall's mom.

Grimes had the best method of handling the situation by handing the ball to the official while standing in the end zone - class and brains.

Kendell's mom is a graduate of the Marshall Wythe School of Law. Not surprised she would lay down the law.

She was berating him to at least put some spin on the ball to go out of bounds before the goal line!!

Despite the Tribe's play, I did not think Hampton's players competed AT ALL yesterday. Almost felt like I was watching a team collectively tank a game.

RE: Hampton
Cluley against Hampton, Standard Downs: 10-16, 62.5% completion, 72 yards, 4.25 YPA, 5 1st downs, 1 TD
Cluley against Hampton, Passing Downs: 11-16, 64.7% completion, 172 yards, 10.12 YPA, 9 1st downs, 1 sack

Cluley went 4-8 for 16 yards in the 1st quarter before getting it going in the 2nd half. His receivers not named Christian Reeves weren't always helpful. The offense is so much better this year in 3rd and long.

Season, Standard Downs: 64-106, 60% completion, 713 yards, 6.73 YPA, 5 TD, 26 1st downs, 6 sacks
Season, Passing Downs: 52-96, 54% completion, 791 yards, 8.24 YPA, 4 TD, 1 INT, 29 1st downs, 5 sacks

Not sure where you are coming from about the receivers not helping him out. Christian only had one drop, Armstrong juggled the ball on one throw, but if there was replay it would have been a catch. DeVonte made a great catch on the TD, as it was a little behind him. Maybe a little miscommunication at the beginning of he game on a couple of plays, but that doesn't necessarily fall on the receivers.

I think the QB/WR play this year has been pretty darn good.

I thought Hampton's defense played fairly well, particularly against the run. They seemed to play chippy to me and put on some hard hits. Our receivers seemed to be well covered as well.

Offense, a different story. You could tell after their first offensive series, they weren't going to be moving the ball on us.

I got the feeling they had collectively put their sites on KA. When he finally broke the big run, a Hampton player was flying after him on a mission, apparently aiming to pop the ball out from behind before KA could get to the goal line. Of course, KA dropped the ball early and I wondered if the kid gaining ground on KA was really the catalyst behind the early drop.

I honestly had to read this a few times to make sure I got the message. You are aware that we ran for nearly 300 yards for well over 5 yards per rush and 3 TDs.

And, there wasn't a defender within 5 yards of Anderson when he tried to showboat and dropped the ball.

C'mon.

You read it right. KAs breakaway was about 25% or more of the rushing total. It's not like we were running through them during the game.

Our first four possessions were 3 and out and three FGs. Somebody was stopping someone. I just remember what seemed to be a number of 2nd and 8s, and until KA broke loose late on the second, they seemed to have him hemmed in pretty well.

Also a number of passes where it seemed there were 2 or 3 defenders right there on or near the receiver. Thankfully, I don't think we ever came close to a pick - against a better team, probably. We also lost Hart (not sure if a fluke or a Hampton hit) - and Desmond got hit by one or two guys when he scored on some pain - pretty hard.

It's not like we gained 700+ yards like our Spider friends. I just don't think "tanking a game" is very accurate at all from what I saw. We just have a lot more talent but I frankly thought we would rush stronger in this game than what actually happened.

I was sittiing around the 15 yard line on KAs run - his drop was just about right in front of me. You can check a tape or something Tribal but there was a man gaining quickly on him who was obviously going to try and pop the ball out. He was probably about 2 yards behind him when KA dropped it.

RE: Hampton
Yeah, I actually did that. #13 was at the 10 when Anderson slowed up and dropped the ball in celebration at the 4-yard area. He may have caught KA in another 20 yards or so but that's too little, too late. KA started slowing down to watch himself on our stadium tv. 7min-something mark of the tribeathletics highlight video.

Okay, deduct Anderson's breakaway run and we still had 200 yards on the ground.

Doesn't matter, we crushed them 40-7 and how either of us views that is enmaterial. I do agree, I don't think athletes at HU's level would tank a game but I'm not sure anyone here made that claim.

Whatever, I'm sure you are correct Tribal.

It wasn't very competitive, that's for sure. I wonder if this is the last in awhile or does Hampton stay on the schedule?
