The only thing that worries me is something Jimmye touched on a little in his postgame: even though our defense held them to 7 points, we did give up a lot of yards. Lafayette may have left 17 points on the board between the two endzone picks and the blocked field goal. I think we win anyway and obviously having a ballhawking defense that forces turnovers is a good thing. Hopefully we start forcing those turnovers before the other team reaches the redzone.
The offense did look sharp. I give a ton of credit to having a healthy line, an experience, confident QB, two strong north south runners and a diversely skilled receiving corp. I know I just stated the obvious, but they all created opportunity for each other.
The line opened holes for the backs and protected well in passing downs. While the bubble screen only gained 5 yards at a time (2nd and five isn't bad), it pulled that outside linebacker out to the flat opening up the run lanes. They had to respect both the run and quick pass. The RS Freshman Armstrong did a great job of getting what he could. Dedmon back assuming he is in that position will be a great combination. Hart, Heald, Reeves, Kuzjak, Armstrong and Caskin ran great routes opening up the other receiver. They keep that teamwork up Cluely will have a great year. Great example is Reeves TD. The safety had to go with 22, leaving Reeves wide open. Cluely could have thrown to 22, he was wide open too.
Solid running and those screens pulled up the corners and the safeties. Great line protection allowed time for the receivers to get behind the D and create big plays.
The D has film to reflect on and improve. Still they made the plays when they had to. They used a lot of guys, that experience will help as we get into the meat of the season.
Can't wait to make the trip to Charlottesville.
