You're right. It wasn't pass intereference......they'd failed to call the touchdown even though the receiver had possession.

My bad.

We pulled them down twice that I remember between '98 and '00. The first time was fun as we dropped it in Lake Wells. The second time I literally thought I was going to die due to a mishandling of the situation by security. A bunch of people, including some not involved in the stands, were pepper sprayed... soooo that ended that.

RE: Tearing Down Goalposts
Neat.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never understood the desire to celebrate a win by rushing the field and then tearing something down, and I've been half drunk at I-AA title games and happy as hell. Just don't get it.

I don't have a problem with it, necessarily, just don't think it's all that cool. I mean, if that's the high point of someone's college career or even life, good for them, I guess. I even agreed with whatever coach it was who said fans had no place on the field because they didn't play -- I think this was after someone got seriously hurt when fans rushed the field and the NCAA was trying to get it under control before some poor drunk bastard got himself killed falling off a goal post or something.

Course, some of my fellow Southern fans were famous for rushing the field before one game was even over -- think it was Western Illinois in the I-AA semifinals years back, but I could be wrong.

On flip side, well, when Southern goes 12-0 this year and then beats Marshall 52-0 in the equalizer rabbits foot bowl this year, I'll finally be ready to rip down a goalpost.

My excuse is that I was drunk and 19. At 35, it doesn't seem nearly as cool. Mostly because as a donor, I think one square inch of that goal post 'belongs' to me.

RE: Tearing Down Goalposts
I got some goalpost stories.

In 2005, both goalpost came down 10 seconds after the game ended. One of the poles ended up IN THE LIBRARY. And everyone kept quiet to respect those studying for finals. Cops formed barricades from the mob going onto the highway and one of the K9's bit his handler. Right before the goalpost were originally thrown in Duck Pond, I ran ahead and tried a sudden stop at the top of the wall. I didn't see the ice and skated off the top of the wall into the water. People around thought I died since it was very shallow with boulders at the bottom, but I was fine if not very wet and cold.

Also, the punter jumped into Duck Pond in full pads and almost drowned and had to be helped out. He later flunked a test for steroids, transferred to ECU and later kicked the punt that the Eagles returned to the house to win at the new Meadowlands in that miracle comeback.

Since the goalposts were going to be replaced after the game anyway, App State collected all the pieces, cut them up into six-inch parts and sold them for $29.23. The final score of the game was 29-23.

We tore down one of the goalpost after beating Michigan and it was the soberest mob ever cause the game was 660 miles away and the only place students could watch on the Big Ten Network was at the local nightclub, which wasn't serving alcohol. We carried the goalpost up Bodenheimer to the Chancellor's House, which was no small feat. After the game, everyone got drunk in time for the team reception celebration/mob/craziness. Lots of boobies.

I swear this is true. After Obama won at 11 pm ET in 2008, a mob went to the stadium and tore down one of the goalpost because the stadium is always open. Some guys tried to tear the other one down and I went to talk them out of it. This was before the indoor facility was finished so if these goalposts went, there would be none. I tried to tell them that our kicked sucked so bad that he needed the practice. At that time, the riot was moving on so the guys jumped down and rioted elsewhere.

Ever since, the cops have been really good at playing prevent zone defense around the goalpost after a big win, but there hasn't been a serious effort to tear em down since. There's been field rushings though. 2011 vs Georgia Southern (number one goes down again) and 2012 vs Furman (SoCon title won on last play).

Some school which will go nameless thought it was a good idea not just to tear them down but to ram one through the window of an opponents bus

I remember how furious the old heads were after they were torn down after Obama 2008.

Also, some school that'll remain nameless decided to park their bus in the way of another school's goalpost celebration.

Those of us who shall remain nameless would also like to apologize for trampling your post game meal.

Sincere apologies,

So let me get this straight...App beats Georgia Southern, tears down the goal posts, then somehow manages to "accidentally" break out the windows of the Eagles bus "because it was in the way"? I mean...how exactly did that work? Did they first try to carry the bus with the goal posts sticking through the windows on their parade (That would be awesome) Or did they ram the goal posts through the windows, realize suddenly a bus was there, and back out and move on?

Also, mental note to not mess with drunk App students.

Label me as one of those "old heads" because it was a senseless and stupid, not to mention dangerous, thing to do. About as bad as when the Braves won the WS. I agree the university basically had it coming by leaving the stadium open, but you have to ask the question, why?

My friend who was a part of the accident said it was an accident. The bus was in a no parking zone. He said he was sorry for any feelings that were hurt, the goal post was fine the rest of the parade.
