Nice fit for them. Can cpntinue to schedule area teams non conference and play 7 conference home and road games when it I hard to find teams with a schedule opening.
I guess NJIT can make one flight to Jacksonville (JU/UNF) one to Orlando or Fort Lauderdale (Stetson/FGCU) one to Atlanta (KSU/USCU) and one to Nashville (Lipscomb) during conference play.

Building a $100 million dollar to play in the Atlantic Sun,what a joke.

NJIT have to start somewhere, the arena is a multi-purpose facility so it will be used for different events besides basketball...

The old gym would have been fine for the Atlantic Sun.
Bonding a $100 million is A POOR FINANCIAL MOVE

The arena project was way out in front of the Asun commit, they can't afford to not take this deal, look at it this way if they was already in the Asun they would very possibly been dancing in the NCAA's this past season, they can build their brand by winning conference championships and then see what happens in the future.
So as of July 1, 2015, the Atlantic Sun Conference will have
Florida Gulf Coast
Jacksonville
Kennesaw State
Lipscomb
NJIT
North Florida
South Carolina Upstate
Stetson
The A-Sun should try to get 2 non-football members of the Big South (Radford and Longwood) to get back to 10. NJIT is a geographic outlier, but it is still better than being the lone independent Division I basketball team.
The Atlantic Sun lost Belmont (OVC) , Mercer (SoCon), East Tennessee State (SoCon), and Northern Kentucky (Horizon) recently and just added NJIT (Independent).

Which current division 1 program other than NJIT would join the Atlantic Sun?
NONE

Right now their travel partner would probably be Lipscomb, which would just be a flight from Nashville to one of the NYC/NJ airports.
If they can get the Big South to place their football programs, they should take three Indiana, West Chester, and Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. They are the three largest schools in their conference by enrollment, and would of course be a short drive from NJIT. For #12, take Bellarmine (Louisville, KY) to partner with Lipscomb.

Good question. They still have Northern Kentucky listed. Certainly not up to date.
Why does NJIT have a 16 million shortfall?
NJIT cannot afford its new events center.
NJIT is number #1 in the % of student funds used to support athletics.
NJIT was shutting course in order to help pay for this events center
