All that rolled into one song. Yep, that's real country music.
Friends in Low Places, except its a bit too upbeat.
Garth was when Nashville figured out the formula to turn country into pop and got it nailed down, with a lot Garth-Lite acts.

Hank Jr and a bit of Charlie Daniels started turning that tide.
But yeah, Garth (and later) ran with it.

I agree with this.
I haven't been much of a fan of much new music and tend to expand my taste backwards in time. Modern Country is pop and pop is hip hop and hip hop is raunchy.
All of it has its roots in Black Protestant Gospel and White Protestant Gospel and I especially like the innovations in the 50's, 60's, and 70's of artists in all of those genres. The 80's New Wave was a mainstreaming of European Punk that was a lot of fun and MTV created a lot of one-hit wonders because they had videos.
I remember memorizing Sugar Hill Gang's Rapper's Delight and enjoying Run DMC and the Fat Boyz before Gangsta Rap took over the genre. I enjoyed some of the grunge stuff and still hear a "new" song eery now and then that I like, but mostly the radio stays on oldies whether broadcast or XM.
I love the old Classic Country and have enjoyed seeing reruns of Hee Haw lately. I have an appreciation of good music and can't get enough of innovators like Queen and Pink Floyd. It is amazing how the internet has revolutionized the industry and provides so much choice. Do people still "buy" music?

Today it's, love won, if love is lost its kiss my ass, a party or drunk theme and of course Merica Hell Yeah that dominates.
Country rose as music for the pissed on working poor and the farmer or rancher getting by. Now its all aimed at a suburban audience that drives Suburbans or $35,000 pick-ups.
I agree with you but when was the last time you priced pick ups my friend?

When I drove by the Ford dealership here and saw a truck out front that had $35,000 written on the front and said damnation what has happened to this country.
Short time later friend said he paid 38 for his new truck. Crazy.

I agree with the general sentiment in this thread. Country today is basically the pop music of the 90s. I much prefer classic country and 90s country over today's country.
However, when I listen to my local, and locally owned, classic country station they occasionally mix in some 80s country (i.e. Juice Newton, Kathy Mattea, Ronnie Milsap, Eddie Rabbit, Anne Murray, Dan Seals, etc.) which sounds as much pop as it could be "country" and comparatively sounded more pop than the 90s country. This got me thinking that all of this is cyclical and eventually country music will bounce back to sounding more "country" like it did in the later 80s and 90s with the "Neotraditional Country Music" movement.
I have always liked music that crosses and/or defies genres. Guess that is why I am or was such a huge fan of Bob Wills. I am a hard down blues guy too. I could listen to Billy Givens doing blues licks forever.
I am a big fan of versatile musicians. Willie Nelson, David Alan Coe, Billy Givens, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and other musicians and songwriters who can seamlessly cross genres.
All country music is pretty much garbage, but I'm glad Cole represents.
On the Migos topic, this was actually said on the GSU board. "Why are we scheduling rap? There is good rap like MC Hammer and this trash." Can't make that up. Hip hop right now is as good as it's ever been with maybe the exception of mid 90s with Biggie, Pac, Outkast, and early Jay-Z.

Racists gonna be racists. I love Georgia Southern, but there's no denying that it has some redneck fans.

Interesting that you think that because I'm sure both Hank Jr. and Charlie Daniels would consider themselves part of the "Outlaw Movement" that started in the 60s/70s as a rebuke to the, more pop oriented, "Nashville Sound" that became dominant after the death of Hank Sr.

I'm not sure what Hip-Hop/Rap you are referring to, but if you are referring to the stuff they play on mainstream FM radio it is horrible. And comparing it to the rap and rappers of the mid 90s, seriously? That's laughable.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the new stutter style of rap. There is some good rap out there, but a lot of it sounds the same... and not in a good way.

Favoring one rap group over other is not racist. That is quite the leap.

Wut? That was said tongue and cheek also folks that not only show up late for a concert but bring a multitude of narcotics and a gun to paid gig on a school campus are trash not matter what genre of music.
Irony is Skins calls an entire genre of music garbage=not a racist, folks make a joke about a one rap group some of which were already convicted felons that are all now charged with multiple felonies=super racist.

Good new country IMO: Randy Rogers Band, Josh Abbott Band, Sturgill Simpson, Jamey Johnson, Aaron Watson, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Casey Donahew Band and Eric Church with a few more I'm probably not thinking of. Of all the ones I named I think Jamey and Church are the only ones who the radio will play. (at least in my region)
Edit: Although Dierks Bentley flirts with the pop sound, I enjoy his music.

Check out jason boland and the stragglers and Frank Foster if you like those guys, also Blackberry Smoke is really good... More southern rock than country but kind of a mix of skynard and the black crowes. Rod melancon is another good one.
