Can't have happened. We don't compete for the same athletes as P5 schools....or so I've been told.

Haha. I was thinking it.

But now we will hear reasons why this was a waste of their time or something.

Looks like we all had the same thought, just from different angles. I was waiting on the explanation that this shouldn't even be a thread because we should just expect to have the same recruits as the top P5s.

Anyone can compete with anyone. Signing 4 and 5 star athletes, well now that's a different story. In theory, you'd want to keep other schools away from 4 and 5 star kids, but in practice, it makes little to no difference at all. Competing, is not signing. Hell, I can compete for a roster spot for the New England Patriots. Mac, Dee, and Dennis did it in an episode of It's Always Sunny.

BTW who released that picture? I'm not trying to start anything but it could be a rules violation. I don't believe the school is allowed to release pictures of recruits. Or at least I think that's the rule

I'm not sure, former Bama RB Trent Richardson visited the Cajuns five or six times between his junior and senior years. He attended our prospect camps as well.

No it isn't, there are pictures from junior day, camps and visits all the time on the recruiting sites.

RE: 5-star Marlon Davidson visits South Alabama (#2 player in country per Rivals)
That is good...... and in past may not have happened.....I am not taking anything away from this recruit or any other.......It is possible that any school....(and no he did not come to Troy) that there will be the occasional kid for what ever personal reason may visit school A or B or C even in the Belt....for those kids effort and time could be expended to land them....The truth is that FOR NOW most 4-5 star kids will get swooned by the big schools and yes the glitz of those schools so that most of us will not wind up landing them......so does a school from the SBC spend a huge effort and expense on those kids....probably going to have to test the waters........I could see a scenario where kid really picks one of us because if that good the pros will come and can get drafted high.....and he wants the chance to play early and be a perhaps dominate player.....SBC crowds and coverage better then past with right set up and a kid may actually self select the smaller school because of a number of reasons......But unlikely that if not by HIS choice that many of us will land those recruits.....Even Boise with all of their success does not land tooooo many of the biggies.....they do compete for now but their track record is like the Gonzaga of Basketball.....they have earned some respect by the 4 and 5 star guys..

With all of that said, I think the fact that he came to USA and looked around and liked it will never hurt and maybe one day or another as SBC continues to progress we will see a few of these guys starting to show up.........

Not that our 2-3 star guys with a few transfer 4's etc can not compete but having a bunch of 3 and 4 with a few 5's ....well those schools depths are better.....so in the future as recruiting in some schools improve the likelihood of being able to compete on a regular basis will as well.

Not to take anything away from the visit, its great. Kids are a little different these days than when I was coming up. I had offers from Bama, Miss St, Southern Miss, Ga Southern, MT, Troy and a couple others. My SAT scores were to low to receive an NCAA scholarship at a D1 school in the end. The state of Georgia, at the time, had a developmental study program that allowed players to still receive a scholarship with a lower SAT. Georgia didnt offer and decided I wanted to go to Bama but could not so I went to GS. Glad I did. Anyway me and some other guys took visits to schools we had no interest in just to get out of school that day. Going on recruiting trips I learned we werent the only ones that were doing that. So sometimes a kid will take a visit just to go. Again not trying to down play the visit, it just crossed my mind as I read this post because I did the same thing. I would love to see more highly ranked players start choosing more SB types. If yall got this kid it might start a tend, who knows.
I remember sitting in Boots Donelley (sp) office, Mid Tenn's head coach and he smoked so many cigarettes that the office was stained yellow and reeked of smoke. I couldnt wait to get out.

USA got a 4* Jalen Thompson last year (downgraded to 3* when he committed to USA). 3* or 4* whatever, it doesn't change the fact that he held offers from Georgia, Florida, Clemson, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Miami, South Carolina, NC State, Arizona State, California, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Duke, Purdue, Minnesota, Indiana, Washington, Memphis, WKU, Northern Illinois, Tulane, UAB, UCF, USM, and Louisiana Lafayette. Miami in particular went after him hard in the last few months, but his commitment was rock solid.

As far as Marlon goes, he is close to Coach Vincent, as the latter coached Marlon's brother in high school. He has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Clemson, Louisville, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Oregon, TCU, Oregon, and Arizona State. From this list of schools he has taken 4 unofficial visits (meaning he paid the cost to go): Alabama, Auburn, USA, and Florida State. And of the 17 other offers listed, 12 were from teams ranked in the final AP poll last year (counting LSU receiving votes); 7 of those were ranked in the top 12. I don't see anything bad of him visiting campus.

Absolutely. I hate what happened at UAB, but I'm glad we have him back. I think we underestimated the impact he had on our offense when he was here before. I just hope we can keep him around for a while, he'll be getting HC offers very soon.

If you read my post again you will see that I said nothing about his visit being a bad thing. I think its great. From my own experience though and have followed recruiting for a long time, I know that many players take visits just to go. If the guy has a relationship with your coach, thats a good thing. Kids today put more stock into relationship qualities than they used to so thats good. As far as cost, maybe his parents have the money to send him, who knows. My parents paid for me to take trips other than the ones the schools paid for. Driving to a place a couple hours away does not cost alot of money. I drove myself, along with some other player recruits, to schools where we just went for the day. Again.....not trying to downplay the visit. I hope you get him.

I wasn't trying to insinuate that you thought the visit was bad. I was pointing out that he wasn't using USA for a visit since this was an unofficial visit and he used his own resources to come here.

People think all players will make the predictable standard choices. That is not always going to be the case.

And even if they all do make the standard choice some end up regretting it and transferring....and what school will they remember?

I agree. I believe a kid that has NFL possibilities can go to a lesser known program and still get drafted high. I wish more would make their choice based on more than just NFL and the glitter of big name programs. If a few big name kids would do it, probably more would follow.
