Georgia State, Tennessee St, South Carolina St, Kentucky St, Alabama St, Arkansas St, Texas St etc.
For whatever reason, the flagship in Louisiana is called "Louisiana State". Therefore they will never allow another University in the state to use the "flagship" nomenclature. It is perfectly understandable that LSU would do that.
Ohio is a flagship, doesn't bother ohio state, houston is a flagship... There are a bunch of examples that don't parallel. We are trying to claim anything, except an athletic brand.
No dog in this fight but this is wrong on several levels.
1. Ohio is not actually a flagship. Ohio is older than most flagships and oddly therefor missed the proverbial boat. OU is in fact not even the 2nd university in the state in size and scope. Currently that goes to Kent State. In terms of research that goes to Cincinnati (who is different because it is a former private school). In terms of overall prestige that goes to Miami. Ohio is an excellent school in many ways but it is not really a flagship in every way though they would like to be. They are approximately the same as many of the MAC schools it associates with.
2. That does bother Ohio State. OSU tried to steal the name from Ohio and Ohio had to go to court to keep it. Michigan even calls OSU "Ohio" even though it is not ignoring that OU even exists. This naming issue is one reason why OSU goes by the full title "The Ohio State University".
OSU would love Ohio to not be able to use or have that name but cannot do anything about it.

I checked the link again and I was mistaken. My point still rings true about the others. Houston is a flagship, so if we call ourselves Lafayette... Would we then be inferring we are a flagship? You don't infer flagship by a name, you either are the flagship or you aren't. Everyone knows who that school is in Louisiana.

as I stated earlier, it all comes down to perception, mainly from outside of the state. A similar comparison in terms of the name thing can be drawn to Southern and State. Even though their actual acronym is GSU and Southern is GS, if we keep going by GSU, and get known by it, that's what everybody else will go with. When it comes to college athletics, nobody gives a rats ass about who is a "flagship" school. It is all about who is perceived the number 1 school in the state. GT is a much better academic institution than UGA, but when it comes to athletics, they are looked at as number 2 in the state. Perception perception perception.
