UAB hoping for big crowd at Saturday's game
Alabama 13 article

Unfortunately they included the following which makes it sound like we are giving tickets away:
"The UAB Athletic Department is hoping to give a boost to tomorrow's attendance. They're handing out free tickets around the community and in local schools; one of ticket admits four people to the game "

all this attendance focus is bad. We've always had low attendance at the end of the season. No matter how good we've been.

It's not about attendance, although some want it to be.

It is about a lack of support by our administration.

RE: UAB hoping for big crowd at Saturday's game
It's kind of ridiculous. We're pretty much being set up to fail on this whole attendance thing because there is some ridiculous, almost unachieveable standard in most people's mind of how many people we need to bring to games.

Troy and USA both had LESS THAN 14k people at their final November home games last year (both had chances to get 6 wins and become bowl eligible going into the game just like us this year) and we're going to get absolutely blasted if we have less than 25k-30k people at our game tomorrow.

I will be happy if we have 20k people there for a November game

It is our side that has been pushing attendance at this game. The media is just picking up on it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but attendance wasn't a big push until Governor Bentley opened his mouth.

I just hope we don't get the screw job like we did last game with the attendance numbers.

The comparing UAB to Troy and USA has to stop. Both of those schools hold a larger market share in their market than we do.

A 14,000 attendance for USA is equal to 3.3% of their Metro population. Troy having 14,000 is equal to 77.6% of their city's population.

14,000 people in attendance at a UAB is only equal to about 1.2% of our metro's population.

Our major issue with regards to attendance is not being able to control our own program and being kicked when we are up.

Our years of actually playing for something meaningful in November is too small a sample set to reach any conclusions.

I've read thread after thread here about how important it was to be at the games long before then.

Yeah, the Marshall attendance talk started way before Bentley was interviewed.

Winning the game is the most important thing. We've already lost two home games.

I have always thought CONSISTENT winning would solve our attendance problems, and I have not yet seen anything to refute that prediction. Being 5-5 is not what I had in mind, but it IS a great START if we can keep playing with this staff and the players they can bring into the program.

I think we were going to have a pretty good attendance anyway. I hate that they did the ticket purchase thing. It will negate in the public's mind any good attendance we have.

To a certain degree I agree. But one thing to keep in mind is what this argument is always about: Optics. Certain people delight in showing empty seats and screaming "see I told you no one goes to games, shut it down ". The optics of a huge crowd is hard to deny. Plus these tickets were purchased and contribute to the bottom line of the department.

It also shows someone out there has a lot of walking around money and is dead serious about his support for the program

The story made it sound like they were never purchased by anyone when I was watching the news last night. They basically said free tickets handed out by the athletic department.

I hope there are 70k fans there supporting uab right now. Would love to see the community come together to stand behind the school and those players. It doesnt hurt to have a top team thats undefeated and #18 coming in either. Go Herd, ? and to a smaller degree, go uab.

Of course they said that. They just went by what their source said. And their source was that initial thread on Blazertalk that insinuated the exact same thing.
