Its the whole 'new team' issue. We have no alumni with any memories of going to games. Traditions have to built. Lets look at brand new programs started over the last 20 years. There are exactly 8 new football programs in FBS. And unlike other schools, our attendance is real, butts in the stands attendance, not corporate bought empty seats.
Lets review the newbies
Doing well
USF - draws pretty well, but everyone would if we were hosting Miami (FL), Florida State, a bunch of ACC schools and high profile AAC teams. USF has been playing football for 10 years longer than USA. Greater Tampa Bay metro. 2.4 million. Unlike FIU/FAU, only college game in town. 47k students.
UTSA - Came out of the gate smoking. San Antonio metro 2.3 million. 28k students. Attendance has been falling recently.
ODU - Has done an excellent job. On campus stadium, lots of transplants alumni of other schools in the area. Only game in town for a metro area of 1.7 million people. 24k students.
Needs work
USA - Off campus and old stadium. Few transplant alumni in the area (except Troy). 16k students. Mobile Metro 604k.
Serious problems exist
FIU - Been around for 12 years. Have an on campus stadium. Official attendance less than USA. Actual attendance appears to be much lower than the official attendance. Metro area - 5.5 million. Students. 50k.
FAU - Been around for 13 years. Have an on campus stadium. Official attendance less than USA. Real attendance appears to be much less. Metro area - 5.5 million. Students...30k.
Ga State - We all know the issues here. 32k students. On campus stadium (basically). Metro area - 5.5 million.
Incomplete
UNCC - On campus stadium. 27k students. metro area 2.3 million.

This wasn't going to be a quick sell in Mobile. We're trying to sell Sun Belt football to fans used to the SEC level matchups. we're playing in an old off campus stadium. USA doesn't have 30-50k students to draw from either. Nor is it located in a 2+ million metro. We have no history of football at any level. And still the team is drawing better than other teams that have been around for a long time (real attendance) and better than some of its newbie peers. And USA isn't really focusing that hard on attendance. They should be. But we are at least as good or better than Akron, Kent, Eastern Michigan, Georgia State, FIU, FAU, UMass, Western Michigan, Ball State, UAB, Tulane (last year and this year excepted), Ga State, UNLV, Idaho, NMSU,
Its a building process. But one that appears to be sustainable. And based upon real support, not corporate giveaways.
Next year, the home schedule features NC State. The new rivalries are going to take a while to interest people in Mobile.

What we can be doing better.
1) Fix the transport problem
2) Fix the scanners
3) Work on Corporate Ticket Sales - a lot of those tickets go unused, but its still revenue and some of those seats do get filled
