OT: turf fields linked to cancer.
Watching the news and they are possible links to the ground tire rubber and blood cancers. Still mostly speculation.

"No research has linked cancer to artificial turf. Griffin collected names through personal experience with sick players, and acknowledges that her list is not a scientific data set."

Still early and probably won't know for another 20 years. Said it was speculation. Just glad GS still uses real turf. Another perk of playing for GS.

There's no reason in the world why any outdoor stadium should have field turf.

ove

If you eat enough of it, drink enough of it, inhale enough of it, smoke enough of it, ingest enough of it, etc., your chances of getting cancer may be increased. Now if there is no evidence, it doesn't matter. You are still at risk according to any kook, or agenda driven group out there.

Except those that have multiple natural springs running under them. When KBS (then Conrad Stadium) was built with natural turf. Unless there was a prolonged drought the playing surface resembled more of a bog than grass field. Artificial turf was installed in 1970 to combat it.

Texas is hot. I'm talking HOT. It stays hot until the end of November. The grass; along with almost all other major vegetation, doesn't survive in Texas heat.

It's just more cost effective to have turf rather than have a grounds crew working 8 hrs a day year round in a futile attempt to keep grass growing on a football field. Hell, hundreds of high school stadiums in Texas have turf.

I worked in rubber manufacturing for about 10 years an I would say that it is all speculation. There is really no difference in ground tire rubber and other rubber products that are produced. Even when it comes to different tire, they have different mixtures for tire hardness and tire drive ability. If there were links you would see them across the entire rubber industry not just rubber recycling products.

I'm sure none of the fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals used to maintain a natural field are linked to cancer.

RE: OT: turf fields linked to cancer.
AState's field turned a lovely shade of brown every year around October 15-20 and the field used to not drain worth a crap (at one point there was a fox burrow in the drainage system) then they got it cleaned out for a season and it did OK and then it rained hard one week and water was standing an inch deep at midfield at the crown. Investigate the issue and apparently the concrete company working on the medical clinic next to the stadium had washed out their trucks into the drain system and the concrete pipes became just concrete, no pipe.

Real turf was a pain in the butt and unless you overseed with rye or bluegrass during the fall (which don't handle the heat here well) you spend half the year playing on a brown field.
