RE: OT: turf fields linked to cancer.
These health scare deals get tiresome.
First I will bet those players have far more in common than just the type of field they played on. Probably similar nutritional supplements, similar exercise profiles, similar persistent injuries, etc. People used to think there was a link between ice cream and polio because polio cases increased when ice cream sales increased.
Second issue I have is screaming headlines stating that fritos (or whatever) increase your chance of a rare colon cancer by 50%. OK if a condition occurs in one person out of every 200,000 that means 1500 out of the 300 million in the US. If eating Fritos increases your risk 50% and EVERYONE ends up eating Fritos then 2,250 would get the condition or one every 133,333 people would get it. Even at that heightened risk level you have nearly a three times greater chance of holding a MegaMillions ticket paying $500 and 39 times more likely to pick a $300 winning ticket in the Natural State Jackpot lottery. I probably play around $300 in the Natural State Jackpot in a year and win $7 about two or three times a year, unsurprising since the odds are 1 in 107 of winning $7.
Right now the odds of dying of Ebola in the US are roughly one in 300 million but according to the news it is a massive health risk we ought to be afraid of.

That's how fear mongering works.

Agreed.
As a cancer survivor it annoys the crap out of me because it takes focus away from the real research. I think about things I have done in my life that may have contributed to my illness but I don't go around preaching it. That's best left to the people that actually know what they are talking about.

Of course it's linked to cancer. I remember a news report years ago from the American Cancer Society which stated there are only 3 things that aren't linked in any way to cancer:
Drinking pure water
Breathing pure air
Standing in the shade
Do anything other than that and you're taking a chance.

1. Sure, they do. Mexican food was supposed to wipe us out, but I still eat plenty. Why? Because starving to death kills folks quicker.
2. As for Ebola, considering it's not only incurable, but the vectors of transmission haven't entirely been understood (IMO, it's spread in a manner quite like the cold or flu and since saliva is a bodily fluid that composes your breath, you best hope someone harboring an infection isn't breathing too deeply near you.) to this point, plus it kills 50%+ of its hosts in a rather gruesome manner, I'd say it's more than just "mongering". Of course, it's easy to just call it such when the past outbreaks have been in isolated areas in Subsaharan jungle outposts, which makes it easy to distance oneself from that stuff. Those of us who study this stuff would conclude otherwise. Just saying.

Don't sweat it. Cancer is mainly a genetic anomaly. I'm not sure research will solve that ever. Every person has their own genetic anomalies that aren't understood and which of those contribute to cancer isn't understood. That is the downside of living longer than people ever have--your cells eventually stop reproducing like they once did. I guess the flipside is that you live in Africa or the Middle East or thereabouts and die of starvation or war well before age 40. No thanks.

you would have to be in a room with pure air also, otherwise its moot to just breathe it.

You see what happens when you bring FOX NEWS type reports to a largely educated crowd... It warms my heart this was immediately mocked lol

1st this was on nbc. 2nd i said it was speculation. 3rd only reason i posted it was because as far as i know GS is the only team in the sbc with natural turf. Kind of a twisted way to influence recruits.
Also, unless anyone is a pathologist or oncologist doubtful that you know more than me about cancer diagnosis and probable causes.

I have a degree in journalism and I know irresponsible reporting when I see it. As a stat buff I can understand how probability and risk as reported is often inaccurate.

Investigate the issue and apparently the concrete company working on the medical clinic next to the stadium had washed out their trucks into the drain system and the concrete pipes became just concrete, no pipe.
Real turf was a pain in the butt and unless you overseed with rye or bluegrass during the fall (which don't handle the heat here well) you spend half the year playing on a brown field.
EKU used to have a Bermuda field. After the first frost, it was a painted Bermuda field........
