I am not sure how we can sit here and say a team is THAT BAD and make assumptions that we will be competitive when we don't have a boat to row at this point, coming off a 1 win season... Sure the future looks bright, but to go into a BIG10 stadium with a bunch of true freshman and sophomores doesn't seem to bode well... We may have a class full of 2 and 3 star kids... while Purdue puts together classes full of 3 and 4 star kids... Our coach has absolutely NO pedigree as an HC while their coach at least has a track record of winning games as an HC...

Just curious what I am missing here... I mean.. Where is all of this un-proven confidence in us going into Purdue and winning come from.

Its just a fun scenario... And Purdue recruiting is not stellar by any means. According to 247 Purdue did not get 1 4 star kid in its 2014 class, and this year so far they have 0 4 star recruits. So I will put up our "3" stars against theirs any day, that's why the game is played. Ask Michigan how their 5 star guys are fairing lately?

According to rivals their QB who started half the season as a true freshman was 4 star. Their 2012 class was ranked 5th in the big ten and should be helping them out this year. Rivals also has them with a 4 star DE committed for 2014,

I should just let this go but being the prick that I am I cant. I said "247" not Rivals, not Scout...which obviously has its own star rankings. And I'm talking about 2014 not 2012, and "FULL of 3 and 4 star kids" is inaccurate as far as I'm concerned basically is my point.

To correct you, you actually talked about 2014 and 2015. I realize you said 247, I just added what Rivals had for them. I was not taking a shot at you but if that is your thing, go for it. We have plenty of pricks around here. You started with their recruiting not being stellar and I pointed out they had a decent class that should be helping them. Yes I am a dummy, you should defiantly be a prick to me because I don't know ****.

RE: The official Broncos @ Purdue gamethread!
Purdue QB- Danny Etling, ranked the 34th best QB in the country coming out of HS. Etling had 7 starts and threw for 1700 yards and completed 56% of his passes against tougher competition.

WMU QB- Zach Terrell, ranked 150th, Stewart #46, Thomas #146. Terrell had 9 starts and threw for 1600 yards with a 53% completion rate.

I'd say Purdue has an edge at QB

Purdue's Oline returns two starters. They're projected Oline is a bit bigger than ours.

They don't return much at RB, and I think we will have a slight edge at WR.

Purdue has a huge edge in size on us at DE, LB, and at DT. They're DE's are good. Tiller sent 10 DE's to the NFL, so they've produced at that spot. If our tackles can't block Ryan Russell (6'5" 275, 2nd team All Conference) it could be a long day for Terrell.

For the most part I think we will have to beat these guys through the air, and that's going to require pass protection. I think they have enough in their offensive arsenal to match whatever production we put on the board. Cirrocci sp and Fleck will have to do more than throw at Davis to beat these guys. If he can spread it around, eat up clock, and put points on the board (FG or TD) I think he can stay in the game. If he has a bunch of early three and outs, gives up field position, and leaves his defense on the field all day, it will be another typical WMU early season BCS smackdown.

I don't think even PJ knows how good or bad we will be game one. Regardless of how bad Purdue was last year their resources blow ours away. We need to see how these last couple classes have developed. I think it is still a crap shoot. I played on a good wmu team and went to Purdue and lost to a bad pre tiller team that we should have beaten. Depends how the young guys respond to a nice little set up at Purdue. We play the games for that reason. We will be young and I hope our OC opens things up more this season. I didn't like his game plans last year on many levels. I hope that part is improved this year.

I hope the team comes out stronger each game than they did last year. We only scored 19 first quarter points the entire season. We didn't score in the first quarter in something like 7 games. (Not sure of the exact number.) Too often we put ourselves in a hole early and were never able to recover.

That wasn't unique to the Fleck regime. Was quite common under Cubit. Maybe part of the culture.........

Im not putting a lot of stock in the opener. But week two better be a competitive game and week three better be a one sided affair. If not I'll be joining the chorus of PJ doubters. In my mind there is no way this team should be on par with last year. Might not translate to W's, but if they execute better, keep the games competitive, and win the ones they should, then I'll be on board.

I'm sticking my neck out and saying we beat Purdue by 3 touchdowns. We quick strike and hit it then sic the dogs on them and they get rocked on their heels and everything goes downhill from there.

For this to work it can't be about the number of stars. It has to be about some hungry dogs and intense desire to be Broncos.

Enough already with paychecks and laying down for the dollar.

Remember At Nebraska when Hiller rolled out to his left and accidentally ran a statue of liberty to the other team?

03-thumbsup I'll put some stock in the season opener as Purdue is a weak B1G team. But if the first three games follow CD's scenario it will go a long way to giving me some confidence. On the other hand, if we don't show improvement early I can see the Fire Fleck thread igniting again.

RE: The official Broncos @ Purdue gamethread!
I agree with Dip's assessment, and will be very frustrated (and begin doubting) if we aren't competitive in weeks two and three. But honestly, the most critical stretch for me this season are games 8-12: vs. Ohio, @ Miami, vs. EMU, @ CMU, vs. NIU. Those are the games I am watching very closely. If we tail off and don't play well those last 5 games, the doubt will start to creep in for me.

We are only like 3 weeks out before fall camp...cant wait. I just hope we hang with teams this year. Last year I left several games at halftime. I think we have made huge strides in the year and half that PJ and his staff have been here. Think we are bigger, faster, stronger with our new weight staff...and chocolate milk. PJ has developed leadership with quality guys, which I think was lacking with Cubit. And what is left of Cubits recruits have conformed and now we will see the effects on this team with Flecks first class of kids. Say what you want...but that is a positive move forward in my book especially when starting with a program that was basically 6 foot under.
