Though UMass already belongs on the list, "UMass (MAC)," ... and Navy (AAC) hasn't happened yet, so the current list is:
Hawaii (MWC), Idaho (SBC), NMSU (SBC), UMass (MAC)
... and if the mooted move in the Sunbelt happens, Navy (AAC) would replace NMSU (SBC), and UMass would replace (MAC) with (SBC), for:
Hawaii (MWC), Idaho (SBC), Navy (AAC), UMass (SBC).

It seems that the kind of students and alumni who show up for the spring game of an FCS school would have noticed. The students and alumni who don't care either way don't enter into the calculus ... because, after all, they don't care either way.

It would give the conference 14 teams. Two divisions of 7, the reg season winner get byes into the second round. Seems to me it would be much easier to achieve the purpose than going through all this other stuff.
What would it accomplish, though? Any BBall-only schools that would be willing to join the Sunbelt for Olympic sports would drag down the Sunbelt's RPI, which already lagged seriously behind the other Go5 conference in this last BBall season. By contrast, NMSU all-sports would lift the Sunbelt's RPI in most seasons.
AAC: 8th
MWC: 10th
MAC: 12th
CUSA: 13th
SBC: 19th
Sagarin ranks by divisions where conferences play in divisions, so the ranking is more spread out, but even with the relative weakness of the MAC East, the Sunbelt still lags behind ... looking at the weighted average conference ratings in parentheses, not by as much as the rankings suggest ...
AAC: 7th (79.87)
MWC: 10th (76.23)
MAC West: 12th (72.61)
CUSA: 18th (70.98)
MAC East: 19th (70.93)
Sunbelt: 22nd (69.96)
... but next year losing WKU (72.52) and gaining GA Southern (63.48) and Appy State (59.52).
Adding NMSU (79.31) all sports goes a ways toward buffering that transition.
