If they actually did, then EKU doesn't have much professionalism.

How is it unprofessional? It was a very hot topic around the community. I know I was getting texts from friends not in the area wanting to know the latest news. On campus it was a very popular topic.

Because an official statement should have been released before EKU started emailing their students.

Besides, I still doubt the validity of the story.

EKU president tweet the Sun Belt will not be adding an FCS school. Go to his twitter account if you want proof. Still came from the mans mouth and not a inside source.
I didn't see it.

Thanks for the link. I hope people will understand this came from the president himself and not just a rumor floating around.

I'm curious as to why, like has been done in the west, the idea of adding two basketball schools in the East (say UNCG or UNCW) hasn't been explored. It would give the conference 14 teams. Two divisions of 7, the reg season winner get byes into the second round. Seems to me it would be much easier to achieve the purpose than going through all this other stuff.

NMSU all sports and UMass football only is what this means as was earlier posted by another App State poster.

With what appears to be immanent you'd think we could get a little UMass chatter.01-wingedeagle

I'd say this is due more to a lack of qualifying institutions as anything. Outside of private Davidson I can't think of another quality basketball school in the area and they're already in an optimal situation in the Atlantic-10.

Non-football schools in FBS conferences are surprisingly rare. The Sun Belt's own UALR and UTA are the only 2 schools that I could find that are in an FBS conference and don't sponsor football.

That could change dramatically if the Big East/A-10/MVC etc are marginalized further with the autonomy vote.

On the other side of the coin, football-only is not as rare (but it's close). Hawaii (MWC), Idaho (SBC), Navy (AAC), NMSU (SBC). UMass will replace NMSU on this list in a few weeks.

Hey SunBelt fans. Thanks for tolerating a EKU fan on here. It was fun and thanks to all who saw the potential in EKU. Sorry for us it's not going to work out this time, or so it seems.
From what I hear we we continue our plans for athletic and academic improvements and move forward with higher expectations for EKU.
Good luck to all of you, especially App State and Ga So. Some old foes who we had some great games with, I hope you are extremely successful in FBS!

You do those things and you will be mighty attractive the next go around. Good luck to you and your program.

The bonus for you guys is that if the rumors are true (a big if, I fully grant you), the spot open isn't being taken by a permanent member, just a short term one.

So come this time next year, depending on how much progress you make, you could be getting the invite.

At least EKU has got things rolling on getting some things in place for hopefully future FBS participation. Am kind of concerned about your upcoming vote on student fees if that survey is close to being correct.
Sounds like you guys need that set up badly. Hang in there.

Let's be honest if they hadn't said anything how many students would of noticed?

I wish EKU the best. And note that they are out there if we need or want another team. And note that they appear to want to join us.

Though UMass already belongs on the list, "UMass (MAC)," ... and Navy (AAC) hasn't happened yet, so the current list is:

Hawaii (MWC), Idaho (SBC), NMSU (SBC), UMass (MAC)

... and if the mooted move in the Sunbelt happens, Navy (AAC) would replace NMSU (SBC), and UMass would replace (MAC) with (SBC), for:

Hawaii (MWC), Idaho (SBC), Navy (AAC), UMass (SBC).

It seems that the kind of students and alumni who show up for the spring game of an FCS school would have noticed. The students and alumni who don't care either way don't enter into the calculus ... because, after all, they don't care either way.

What would it accomplish, though? Any BBall-only schools that would be willing to join the Sunbelt for Olympic sports would drag down the Sunbelt's RPI, which already lagged seriously behind the other Go5 conference in this last BBall season. By contrast, NMSU all-sports would lift the Sunbelt's RPI in most seasons.

AAC: 8th
MWC: 10th
MAC: 12th
CUSA: 13th
SBC: 19th

Sagarin ranks by divisions where conferences play in divisions, so the ranking is more spread out, but even with the relative weakness of the MAC East, the Sunbelt still lags behind ... looking at the weighted average conference ratings in parentheses, not by as much as the rankings suggest ...

AAC: 7th (79.87)
MWC: 10th (76.23)
MAC West: 12th (72.61)
CUSA: 18th (70.98)
MAC East: 19th (70.93)
Sunbelt: 22nd (69.96)

... but next year losing WKU (72.52) and gaining GA Southern (63.48) and Appy State (59.52).

Adding NMSU (79.31) all sports goes a ways toward buffering that transition.

RE: Sun Belt informs EKU it will not expand with FCS team
I have to laugh at Idaho being considered a "heck of a lot better addition" than Liberty would have been, in football and in all sports. As an FCS program we have Idaho beat in all the categories you care about...tell me, realistically, what business does a school have playing FBS football with a 14.8 million dollar athletic budget and a 14,700 average attendance? We averaged more as an FCS program with TWO absolutely awful Division II opponents at home.

Really quite laughable to think that an Idaho program is better for the SBC than Liberty, and those beliefs bring into question the credibility of ideas on this board.
