RE: Rice @ Tulane (Sunday, Game 3)
Jon ends it in style-- 1-2-3 with the final two strikeoutsKKKK.

Really important bounce back 4-0 week, and good show of resilience today coming back from a 5-0 first inning deficit. I sure wish the offense would show up for more than one inning a game, but I suppose if we're going to put up 9 runs on 11 hits in that one inning, it will usually be sufficient.

Game Ball #1: For the second time this week, Trevor Teykl (W, 3-0, 5.0 IP, 2 hits, 4 runs, 4 BBs, 2 HBP, 4 Ks)-- who was once again called upon very early, with insufficient warm up time, and after settling in, he kept us in the game until understandably tiring in the 6th inning (his 11th inning of work over the past 5 days). Great job.

Game Ball #2: Charlie Warren (5-5, SB, 1 run scored, RBI).

Game Ball #3: Jon Duplantier (Save #1, 3.2 IP, 5 hits, 0 runs, 3 BBs, 5 Ks)-- got himself in and out of trouble each and every inning until the 9th, but consistently got the big out when he had to.

Back to winning, error-free baseball...and back in the lead in the CUSA race. Heading into next weekend's big series against UAB, we'll have no worse than a one-half game lead (as UAB currently leads USM 5-3 in the 5th). Safe travels home. Go Owls!

Elf, I really enjoy your reporting style, especially the details on the mound conferences. Nice Bull Durham reference. But Miss Kilgallen? How old are you?

That's a fifty + year old reference to What's My Line, Hosted by John Daly

I first remember watching it in the fifties so I must be pretty darn old by now.

Many thanks to elf owl for the entertaining description of the game. It was much more enjoyable than "why can't we execute a bunt" or "let's work the count against this soft-tossing lefty" ....

Loved this. So difficult to work in Arlene Francis, though.

I actually was in an elevator once with Kitty Carlisle Hart in NYC (she lived in the same apartment building as my half brother). I suspect I was one of the few 10 or 11 year olds in America who actually knew who she was (from To Tell The Truth I believe - not sure if What's My Line was on the air at that point). Later I found out she was pretty well known for a lot of other reasons (including being in the Marx Brothers film A Night At The Opera) and marrying Moss Hart, among other things.

Positively ancient. I too remember watching it in the fifties, on the 10 inch B&W TV we had. I bet the younger people here would not believe a quiz show that paid $5 for each wrong answer by the panel.

Yup...that means our next three CUSA opponents (UAB at home, USM and UTSA on the road)-- the first two in the always difficult two-week period leading up to the Finals break-- are all half a game back and even with us in the losss column. We have historically played very well in Haittesburg, but a difficult road trip (requiring a lengthy bus ride) the final week of the Semester (with all the academic pressures omnipresent) is really going to test our guys.

I'd expect to see "All Staff" tomorrow vs. Lamar, as I very much doubt either Teykl or Duplantier will be available. Consequently, it will likely come down to some combination of Smith, McCarthy and Orewiler, with Ditman available for 1 - 2 innings to close things out. Of course, McDowell could be available for a couple innings, given he only threw to 4 batters on Sunday, even if he's scheduled to start on Sunday.

It's step up time.

I have no idea what you are all talking about. I thought John Daly was a pro golfer. 03-wink

You are correct. Same John Daly. The other Parliamentarians are referring to a game show that Daly was court ordered to host following one of his stints in rehab.

The show was called "What's My Line?," a title derived from a famous incident in Daly's life. Following the Master's one year, Daly wrapped his Lexus around a tree in suburban Atlanta. When cops showed up, Daly had stripped down to his tighty-whiteys and was doing Zeppelin air guitar on the roof of his smashed car.

The officers conducted a sobriety check, asking Daly to close his eyes, touch his nose, and walk in a straight line. As the story goes, Daly kept shouting, "Where's that confounded bridge?," "Does anyone remember laughter?" and "What's my straight line!?"

John was arrested, found guilty, and sentenced to two seasons of game show hosting. As a wink to its origins, NBC titled the show "What's My Straight Line?" then later shortened it to "What's My Line?" at request of the show's main sponsor, Lexus.

And now you know the rest of the story...
