Well it IS happening next year, this being El Paso's second time hosting the C-USA Basketball tournaments.

Sigh, there's always going to be the "anti-tournament in El Paso people" as I call them. While El Paso is geographically farther from the rest of the C-USA members, El Paso at least shows up to the basketball games. The last tournament in El Paso in 2011 made around $951,000 so it was deemed a financial success which is why El Paso was awarded the C-USA Basketball Tournaments next year. Other than El Paso, there really isn't much in attendance support or interest out there to support or host the tournament. Birmingham is the only other city to have shown interest in hosting the tournament before (they've bid for it before), so other than El Paso they might be next in line to host it but attendance wouldn't be higher in Birmingham than in El Paso. Some have brought up San Antonio as a possible host site, but as someone mentioned they only average around 1,000 fans a game.

Last year's abomination of a regular season aside, we average much more than that. More to the point, we sold out the Convo last time we hosted a conference tourney. And that was the Southland.
I actually agree that El Paso is probably a better host financially speaking, but we may be better from a visiting fan standpoint. We also have an NBA venue, so there's that.

Dallas - transportation hub, large alumni base for: UNT, UTEP, Rice, La Tech, some UTSA, growing amount of attractions/entertainment in the uptown area of Dallas.

I would like it in Dallas one of these years. We need to pick an Eastern location as well to make it fair. The Mississippi Gulf Coast would be nice.

...
That debate has been rehashed forever. The tournament is an income producing event for the conference. Put it at a neutral location and my opinion is that the income dries up, the games will show poorly on TV in front of minimal crowds, and non-member locations will be reluctant to post decent sized guarantees for a nonSEC/ACC/BE/etc conference.
...just my opinion based on the history of the conference even when "big crowd" Louisville, Cincy, etc were members.
OT, agree with the "neutral" but I think he is good with the "quasi"....the coast would work IMHO....unfortunately, you guys are gone...sigh....just when we started to gather talent

the more I think about this and read responses, I could see a Dallas, Charlotte, Biloxi rotation being a nice move

RE: Basketball Tourney Future.
Tiger fans would know best if my numbers below are accurate. But IMHO-
The fan-friendly travel sites mean little if each CUSA school AVERAGES 250 visiting fans. The games on tv would still look really bad. National perception is already a battle. That said, if ANY city feels it can draw well, then it should be confident enough to make the $1M guarantee.
In the end-
Most wont make the guarantee because CUSA schools (as a group) cannot be counted on to bring the necessary number of fans to make it a successful event. This means we have to rely on the schools with the local fan bases to do it. Again, there are only a few of those as well.

I am sure ODU can pull a decent crowd for the tourney as our history suggests. Why not Norfolk?
