If Kent was not so highly ranked there is almost no way NIU would have gotten to the Orange Bowl. Kent was higher ranked than NIU at the time and Kent was also technically NIUs best win. NIU fans should be happy that the Kent State team was good enough to boost NIU into the Orange Bowl by leapfrogging Kent. If the reverse occurred Kent fans should have been grateful to NIU being good because a win against NIU would have sent Kent to the Orange Bowl as well.

The notion that NIU "slid" into the Orange Bowl is preposterous. Neither NIU nor Kent State were guaranteed a BCS Bowl and each needed a victory over the other to boost the SOS. If Kent State was idle that week they do not get a BCS Bowl.

NIU took care of business, Kent State did not. If Kent State had won, would you be saying that they "slid" in?

Let's be honest, the only reason Kent State was ranked above NIU was the inherent flaws in the system. Anyone who actually followed MAC football knew that NIU was the better team. Las Vegas knew as well, making the Huskies the favorite in the game despite being the lower "ranked" team.

I kind of have to agree with (obnoxious) NIU fan here, Kent State was dominated, not just in the stat book, but on the field. The scoreboard didn't reflect this, you are correct, but that doesn't change what physically took place between the sidelines.

To comment that if one was "idle" or not and got in is what is preposterous. Going into the MACC KSU was in decent position to make the Orange Bowl a reality, while nobody thought NIU would get in. NIU needed KSU sitting where they were to knock them off to get in, not the other way around; any typical MACC opponent would've been enough. As for Vegas dictating who is better, that shows just how little you truly know about how Vegas lines operate to influence bets and spread money. I'm far from a sore loser, I'm proud of what KSU accomplished, but think some here have been pretty sore winners and pissing on people for no reason.

NIU didn't slide in, they had the national spotlight on them after they beat UMass by a lot of points. All the experts* were saying that it proved they were good enough to play in the NCG.

The team I recall having the national spotlight on them promptly choked down a 4-4 conference record (losing all games to MAC teams with winning records, Hello Temple!).

Wins included a 3-point win against 1-11, 63ish scholarship UMass, a 6-point win against 1-11 Akron IN ATHENS, and a 7-point win against 4-8 Buffalo IN ATHENS. Losses included a loss to 4-8 Miami.

Oh, and since the Boobcats love throwing out the injury excuse, it should be noted that their win against Buffalo came in Buffalo's 5th game of the season when Buffalo was injured but Ohio was healthy, and before Buffalo got healthy and won 3 of its last 4; otherwise, the outcome would VERY LIKELY have been different.

Kent State was a great team last year and had a great season.

NIU was a great team last year and also had a great season.

Can't we just leave it at that?
