SHSU's Luke Plucheck just hit a 2-run double with the bases loaded. SHSU up 4-2 in the 7th.

Well they are in the process of losing to Bryant, so I don't think you will hear much out of those guys again.

We seem to struggle in tournaments. There is no jinx involved. We have some really good hitters and they seem to disappear in high pressure situations like the huge 3 game series against South Al and tonight.

We had some issues like that as well, but more-so with our pitching. You saw it tonight with Cody Dickson and his 4 HBP and in the SLC tournament where we went 1-2. This game is still up in the air.

I am pretty sure SHSU will be facing LSU and Nola tomorrow and we will throw Boutte against Jackson St.

I've been thinking about this too. I'm concerned because ESPN has been giving a lot of TV time to the SEC, ACC, and I think I even saw the Big East, baseball this season - including full coverage of their tournaments. I'm sure this will grow with things like the "SEC Network."

What kind of effect could this have on the SBC's tradition in baseball? Kids like to play on TV, get that exposure. Could we start seeing in college baseball the same things that happened to college basketball and college football? ESPN covers the conferences it believes are the most marketable, making those conferences "the" conference in the respective sports, and a gap begins to grow.

I don't think it'll happen. The amount of scholarships allotted for baseball isn't as much as you would imagine, this is why even the powers tend to have regional baseball players that they have manufactured into big time players. Also, the ability for high school players to go directly into the draft makes it more likely that kids who are in it for TV exposure and big money would already be gone. I think College baseball is gonna be driven by crowds and coaching. If they didn't make it into the draft (or high enough in the draft to really matter) then they will want to play in front of large crowds. The other side to that coin is Coaching. Most players want to show that they can develop into MLB material, so going to the right coach is important to a lot of these guys. Ultimately, I think programs like, Troy, USA and UL will stick around regardless, the same way that programs like Cal State Fullerton and Wichita State will be around for a while.

RE: Baseball Regionals: Sun Belt Day One
Exactly right, baseball is just a different animal. A non-power conference school has a much easier time making it to the College World Series than the Elite Eight, though there is a lot of parity in basketball lately thanks to the draft. With 11.7 scholarships to be divided among 25 roster sports, the big schools just can't stockpile baseball talent like they can in the other sports. Basketball has 13 scholarships for 15 roster sports and football has 85 scholarships. The really good player who would start only their senior season at UT could get a better scholarship offer at UTA and take it. Then lead UTA to success. It has happened many a time.

As an example, our ace who lead us to the NCAA tournament in 2001, beating a lot of good programs before running up against Rice in the tournament, started out as a walk-on. The odds of a starting quarterback or point guard who is a 1st team all-conference selection being a walk-on is so much smaller.

Add in the fact that baseball is a game that literally any team can have a chance to win on any given day and it means there will always be parity in NCAA baseball.

Thanks for the info guys. I didn't realize the scholarship situation. Hope you guys are right about its effect on baseball versus the other sports. All the money being thrown around just concerns me.

The scholarship creating parity in the non- money sports is true when it comes to talent. As someone stated earlier, coaching does become a factor and that is where the major schools might be able to take an advantage. The money helps them to pay the best coaches and create the best facilities for player development across the board for all sports more often than not.
