I was there and liked the arrangement, as well. Bartow Arena is a very nice BB venue. Your pep band is very good also.

RE: National anthem
I was ambivalent towards the playing of the National Anthem at a ballgame, until I heard it on 09/22/2001. Now I have a much greater appreciation for its playing and the display of respect to the flag.

That's not true. I've seen every one of Coach's Chalk Talks and I've been in the stands for every playing of the National Anthem this season.
Memphis lined up, because they got "caught" unaware and were still on the court when the flags lined up. Didn't anyone notice they were on the wrong end of the court (opposite their bench)?
I have no opinion one way or the other on teams being on the court or in the locker room during the National Anthem...but if they are still preparing for the game at that time, the team has bigger problems.
My main gripe with the National Anthem at UAB games is the horrendous arrangement Dr. Samuel utilizes.
Question: How do you propose closing the bathrooms? Send the White Coat Brigade in to drag folks out of stalls? Just curious...
Memphis stays on the court for every game...they were not "caught". They line up on the end of the floor that they are warming up, which in the first half is opposite of the bench.
That's true. However, the rest of the story........
For decades Memphis (State) always stayed on the floor for the national anthem until 1973. That was during a period of significant civil unrest and we had a center that sat on the bench instead of standing during the playing of the anthem one game.
After that game, Coach Bartow changed to protocol to avoid the issue and returned to the locker room prior to the playing of the anthem.
We did that for a long time and I can't remember when we changed to staying on the floor.
The center, John Washington, had a relatively good college career but wasn't NBA material and played in Europe for several years. After his career in Europe, and older, wiser, and traveled John Washington had a different view of our anthem and wished that he had been more respectful in his early years.

RE: National anthem
If the "brave" part was closer to what we are accustomed to for the National Anthem, I don't believe anyone would object to the version that is played.
So taking the "brave" part down a notch would probably suffice.
I know that is probably the way it was composed and going against that would be wrong as well.

Thats not true. The national anthem is usually played after the chalk talk, and was done so at the game Sat night as well. I attend both regularly for each home game so I know what Im talking about.

Since you asked, YES, the Chalk Talk presentation was over well before we went out for the National Anthem. The G&G Room was almost empty by the time the song was played. Had the NFL game not been on TV there, it would probably been completely empty.
It was my first time this season, so I was not aware there was a perceived problem until I got back home and read about it here.

I don't think that's completely true. While I wasn't in there, I've heard from some pretty reliable sources that Haase was finished with plenty of time to get to your seat before the anthem was played.

RE: National anthem
The best anthem ever was during the CMA era when the PA system failed and the crowd helped the young lady doing the singing finish the song.

We stand Lined up opposite our bench at home for the Anthem for EVERY game! With that said, the majority or teams will go into the locker room for their final pre-game pep-talks/adjustments, and usually teams that stand for the anthem, their coaches don't appear for it like Pastner does. Not trying to start anything, just was replying to this post to point out that's just how we do it here and at away games!

there's also a very good write-up that ESPN has on their site that someone posted on the Memphis forum. Gave me goose-bumps. Plus it gives insight on how it's tied to sports. I learned quite a bit by reading it, especially didn't know that Baseball played it during the "7th Inning Stretch" BEFORE it was adopted as the national anthem!

Well, we all have differing opinions on this topic.
I really like the approach Pastner and Memphis take regarding the National Anthem, but that's just me.
