Gus is starting out pretty well for a first time head coach.

Here's an interesting nugget from that same article.

Quote:Barring in dramatic change, UTSA looks to be at nothing better than a three to four win team over the next several season and living near the bottom of C-USA heading into the 2015 season.

I would love to hear which 3 or 4 teams they expect to get those wins. UAB? Maybe in a couple of years.

"The SEC only had 5/12 teams with a winning conference record. They are obviously a very weak conference and Texas State could come in and compete immediately. Heck, the Sun Belt only had 4/8 with a winning record. Why wasn't TState chosen to compete in a BCS Bowl this year??????"

Ready to compete from day one in football

Let's be honest here, football is the big driver at Texas State and most universities. No offense to baseball, basketball, soccer or any other sport but Bobcat nation wants their football team to win more than any other sport and being in the Sun Belt allows for that to happen quickly.

Arkansas State with new head coach Gus Malzahn at the helm went 10-3 including 8-0 in conference last season. Western Kentucky finished 7-1 in the Sun Belt, Louisiana-Lafayette went 6-2. Outside of that, the Sun Belt lacks any team that went .500 in conference let alone win more than four games in 2011. The least team in the SunBelt (excluding USA & Ga St) is years ahead of anything you guys can imagine.

It may be 2 or more YEARS before you get your first conference win.

Not a chance in the world of being competitive "from day one".

You guys are as completely delusional as LaTech fans.

I understand where you are coming from, and you may end up being right for all I know. However this year was our first full FBS class which was tops in the WAC and would have been probably number 2 or 3 in Sunbelt especially with FIU gone. While most of those players will be red-shirt freshmen or sophomores, we did go the juco route to add depth at several positions. Also 2012 will be our second year of transition, we will be a full FBS program by the time we join the SBC. While I don't expect us to win the Sunbelt, I seriously doubt we will go winless.

Well, there are a couple of games you can look to. 1) Central Arkansas versus Arkansas State and 2) Central Arkansas versus Louisiana Tech.

Central Arkansas came in and gave stAte a run for its money early and kept it a game. But then they wore out and ended up getting pounded 53-24 in the second half. That was an SBC champ versus Southland runner-up (and possibly runner-up only because of injury).

Central Arkansas went in to LaTech and lost 48-42 in OT. That was an 8-5 WAC and future CUSA.

Texas State will have a year of FBS and a year of WAC experience under their belt when they enter the league. So they will benefit from that.

Texas State is going to have a tough time of it. But I would not overlook them and it will be possible for them to rear up and bite someone if that someone is not careful.

RE: Texas st presser made me sick.
I just want to say this Texas State fan is glad to call the Sun Belt home. The Sun Belt is an upgrade from the WAC, I was only looking forward to Utah St.
I like that more games will be easier to travel to and we won't be playing games PST.

As far as the envy of UTSA it comes down to a lot of things. My main peeve is that they have done nothing, they have 10 games under their belt, they play in a city owned stadium, and they use a local high school field for practice. While Texas State has grown so much over the last 10 yrs, improving most athletic facilities and becoming competitive in most sports. I say most because basketball is another story.

Anyways, I glad we're here and look forward to being a member of the ' Belt.

What is the Return Policy on TxSt? Can we get a rain check....

Maybe their fans want to be with NMSU, Idaho.....on the outside looking in...

Seriously, they have never played a down of D1 football...I would rather have App St. and Ga Southern. While we are at it....do we really need UT-A? The Texas market is not really going to help the other SBC schools for TV or recruiting.

From SunBeltSports.org:

"On behalf of the presidents and chancellors of the Sun Belt Conference, it is my honor to welcome Texas State University as the newest member of our league family," said Sun Belt Conference Executive Committee President and Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Jr. "We are not the same conference we were 10 years ago. The Sun Belt is strong athletically as demonstrated by the fact that our bowl record over the last eight years is better than five other BCS conferences. We are stronger academically, as 90 percent of our teams have achieved an Academic Progress Rates of 925 or higher. Texas State is an excellent addition to our strong, growing conference."

Literally 24 hours prior to accepting an invitation to the Sun Belt, Texas State was making one last push to get in the Sun Belt. Now they act like they've been raped.

Welcome to the Bigs boys and girls of Texas State.

This is how it works whether you are Rutgers, the oldest most football program there is, located in a massive market watching six (maybe more) of your former "partners" dance away and having to now go to Boise, Idaho to play a conference game, or whether you are Texas who got the heck away from unworthies like TCU and watched TAMU dance away for dollars forcing you to add TCU and now travel to West Virginia to play conference games, or if you are ECU with the second best attendance among the non-AQ watching 13 teams slide away including two who haven't played football terrible long and replace them with six schools where three of teams are new than FIU. Or be Arkansas State or Louisiana who racked up nice attendance won games this year and watched the media market teams leave.

That's life in the bigs.

But on the upside you aren't Idaho and you aren't NMSU so already you are farther ahead in the game than program that has played at the NCAA's highest level since 1959 (NMSU) and now appears to be in trouble surviving and you aren't a school that spent more than 2 and 1/2 decades playing USC, UCLA, Oregon, etc., until a realignment mess kicked you on the street and may make you the first program to fall out of the highest level of NCAA football three times.

Such wise counsel. Maybe Texas St ought to just go back to the WAC and play their chances there. Sheesh.

First off I want to say how happy I am to be in the WAC. I see great things going on in the Sun Belt. Now that that is out of the way, please excuse the demenor of out staff. They are not the best when it comes to public speaking. I will tell you though The Sun Belt just came away with a Steal bringing us in. No matter what you may read on the fan forums our fans are hungry for success in FBS. We will do what ever it takes to build a solid program. We are already planning to expand or Stadium even more. The North Enzone will be ready for the 2012 season.
Our administration is already prearing funds for expanding our South EndZone.

This reminds me of that time in high school where you asked that hot girl to go to the dance with you and you were turned down and so you ended up with a still pretty girl but not your initial choice. Later you end up with a long term relationship and you find that you are very happy with this pretty girl and in fact might be more happy as the other girl may have flaws you do not know about at the time. Remember that time (or know somebody who had something similar)? Then you know how Texas State feels.

First I just want to say that I do not intend to offend anyone. I respect all schools and look forward to the competition. However, I won't come on here and lie and say that I wasn't upset. I was and am still really upset. Not so much about being in the Sunbelt but how everything panned out. If we made the move to the Sunbelt initially instead of the route that we took, there would be no issues at all. It was our Adms and the methods they used that really kills most. I don't know their jobs nor all of the issues they deal with but there are some fundamental flaws that I believe create hard feelings. Some of those flaws being pointed out in the first post.

The Sun Belt guys that have come over to BF.com have been unbelievably respectful and that is refreshing. Thanks
