Yes but only if we lose 1-2 teams.

That said, I'm not sure there are eight(or more) eastern based schools out there who can make that move, let alone all at the same time.

So...

UMASS
Deleware
JMU
Old Dominion
UNC-Charlotte
App State
Georgia State
Georgia Southern

That's eight right there and the geography isn't great, especially for schools that would be moving up and some of those schools might be a reach, I can't really think of any other schools that wouldn't be an even bigger reach, I guess throw Jacksonville State in there, but that's even more of a geographic reach.

Don't forget Richmond, Kennesaw State and FGCU. Probably UNF - North Florida as well.

North

Deleware
James Madison
UMASS
Richmond
UNC-Charlotte
Old Dominion

South

App State
Florida Gulf Coast
Georgia State
Georgia Southern
Kennesaw State
North Florida

(VCU if UMASS goes to the MAC or Big East)

Did you...didy ou just include a bunch of schools with no teams and no money? Is this your 2023 list?

The question was concerning the viability of a new FCS conference in the East that could be FBS ready within 10 years?

So I added Richmond and Kennesaw State to the list.

Richmond is a known quantity.

Kennesaw State has announce it is starting football and would be a natural rival for GState and GSouthern.

FGCU is biting at the bit since a new private school in the area Ave Maria has stated it will start football next year. FGCU’s enrollment is over 12,000 and will probably be above 20,000 by 2020.

If FGCU starts football, then that will put extreme pressure on UNF to start a program.

Stetson University has also announced it will start a football program.

UWF, a member of the Gulf South Conference, will announced by this summer if it will start a football program.

Therefore, UNF will be the only state school and major private school without football. UNF’s enrollment is over 16,500.

UF – football
FSU – football
UCF – football
USF – football
FAU – football
FIU - football
FAMU – football
BCU - football
FGCU - football (likely)
UWF - football (likely)
UNF - football (likely)
Stetson – football
Ave Maria – football

UNF - no football, not likely.

Enough about Florida. How does the geography of the North /South Divisions sit with you. Is it viable?

Good for them ! let them live with their fond memories. Don't need to add any FCS schools.

RE: Appalachian State to Sun-Belt?
VCU certainly will be raking in cash after their run to the NCAA tournament (along with conference mate George Mason picking up a couple of units as well), so they might as well pounce on a deal while they still can.

I'm sure the early successes at Old Dominion probably have also been noticed by VCU.

RE: Appalachian State to Sun-Belt?
A couple of things, 1) any move toward a new FBS conference is gonna happen inside of 5 years because of the outside factors driving the creation of said conference (other conferences losing members, big publics not wanting to be left on the outside. So you can scratch Kennesaw, FGC and North Florida off that list. None of those schools have the financial wherewithal or institutional backing to make a move from zero to FBS in that time period. 2) No sense in mentioning small private schools that have zero interest in moving up. So you can scratch Richmond and for that matter W&M even though they were not mentioned. What happens next Tuesday (Nova announcement) and in the ensuing months (UMass announcement or non-announcement plus what do Maine and UNH do in response to UMass leaving if they do) will decide if a new conference is created and what its complexion will be. One thing is for sure though, the tea leaves say that App State, GSU , ODU, JMU and most likely even GaSouthern are not going to be waiting around by when Kennesaw and the Florida schools are ready.

We're not doing this again. LOL.

Just show me one official doucment from the adminstration where they refer to Georgia Southern as GSU and not GS and Southern. I refer you to the Palin thread. LOL.

Back on topic.

RE: Appalachian State to Sun-Belt?
Excuse me for wanting to comment on the original topic of this thread, but I am not in favor of Appalachian State entering the SBC because it is very difficult to travel to from any of the current SBC schools. It is a wonderful school in a beautiful area and their fans are some of the best in the South, but it just would not be a good fit. JMHO.

RE: Appalachian State to Sun-Belt?
I think in expansion that point is often neglected, especially by those wanting to move up. If you're not near a major airport or if I have to drive 2 or 3 hours from the nearest airport maybe I dont want to play you every year. It would suck for western members to have to fly to Charlotte (and most likely connect in Atlanta) and still not be there. But like I said before, its a moot point because App State's feasibility has already nixed the Sunbelt as an option.
