Freeze likes him because he is aggressive, and will gamble to get that offense the ball back back.
Any stAte fan who has watched our d bend and break late in games should appreciate the more aggressive philosophy Wommack will bring.
This is the best argument for his hiring I've heard. Wommack does like to blitz and will press the action. His schemes got figured out at Tech but maybe he's got some new ideas to try.

Maybe you should give your football team some tips.

After two years of steadily declining results he was let go.
He did do well at USM before coming to Atlanta, so maybe he can rediscover what worked for him at ASU.
As I recall, the defenses he fielded at Ga Tech were ranked in the 50's. If he can get us up to that point, combined with our current offense, we'll be ok in the SBC.
Our defense wasn't anywhere close to that last year, and we were a few plays from being right in the mix.
That Tech defense was loaded with talent and had the advantage of an offense that eats clock.
I'm not trying to slam the hire (much). I really like Freeze, but I saw Womacks' defenses up close here in Atlanta and they really underwhelmed.
The guy who replaced him at GA Tech had an even worse defense. ASU isn't asking him to win in the ACC. They are asking him to win in the Belt.
But they aren't asking him to win the Sun Belt with the same talent level that he had at Georgia Tech either. Winning the Sun Belt might be easier than winning the ACC, but winning any conference should be reasonably as difficult to winning any other conference because it's all relative in regards to the talent you're able to recruit and the resources at your disposal. Of course the higher you go it does get more competitive and thus it does get more difficult, but I wouldn't say by a huge margin.
I'm not passing judgement on the hire one way or the other, I just don't think your argument is necessarily all that sound.
