NBC Sports: Last one out, turn off the WAC lights please
Posted by John Taylor on January 19, 2011, 10:11 AM EST
The Western Athletic Conference is already listing due to the departures of Boise State this year, and Fresno State, Hawaii and Nevada next year, all for the Mountain West.
Now, the league is facing the possibility of yet another departure. And a potential death knell when it comes to major college football.
In other words, and in the not-too-distant future, the Old Yeller treatment may be in order for the WAC. It’s the only humane thing left to do.

I'm sure there are more SLC teams ready if the WAC needs them. Maybe UCA will step up.

The MWC is the WAC.
Does this look familiar?
East:
Air Force
Colorado St
New Mexico
Utah St
Wyoming
Boise St
West:
San Jose St
Fresno St
San Diego St
Nevada
UNLV
Hawaii
The only thing is, they ran-off La Tech, Idaho and NMSU
:noisycricket: and killed the old WAC.

La Tech would still be out in the cold due to geography.

They won't go to 14. The league is still hoping to eventually steal the Big East's BC$ automatic bid down the road. Going to 14 will not do that for them.
Neither will staying at 10 or going to 12. That ship has sailed. TCU and Utah found an easier path to BCS AQ status.

There is room for 7 AQs in the BCS formula. MWC doesn't have to "steal" the Big East's AQ, they only need to meet the benchmarks in place.

No combination of available teams gets them anywhere near what they need to be AQ. If they were able to add Houston and Houston and Hawaii can pick up steam again, an argument could possibly be made that Boise/Hawaii/Nevada/Houston>BYU, Utah, TCU...but even with all four of those schools performing at a high level, they would still have work to do.

It seems like going to 14 would get more TV money for the conference, allow for easier football scheduling, and protect them a bit more in any future membership changes such as AFA going independent or somehow joining the Big 12.
Also, it increases the odds of another airport meeting tenfold.

They won't need to do that because the Mountain West is considering a new television deal that may or may not include the Mountain Television Network.

They need to drop that network like a bad habit. Even Verizon is at a standstill, because they can't add any more HD channels without cutting existing ones, remove the SD channels and let those viewers have downconverted HD (honestly, I don't know why they don't do this already), or finally roll out their IPTV solution. That said, even on DirecTV, the network is only HD sometimes because of limited content, bandwidth constraint, or both. Anyway, that's just one provider. It's much worse for traditional cable companies who have to fight at both ends of the spectrum (basic cable and digital expanded cable).
It's hard to believe that in a day and age where ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, possible format changes on ESPNC and ESPNEWS, and ESPN3 exist, and CUSA leaving for Fox Sports, that something couldn't be worked out. At the moment, if Boise State were to hit a tough couple years, most people east of Ft. Collins would barely know the conference even exists.

Not so fast. The current contract which goes through 2015/2016 and was worth $12 million a year for 10 years is going to be renegotiated for two reasons:
1) The new membership
2) The recent developments involving one of the Mountain West Sports Network's owners, Comcast. The U.S. Government approved the company's merger with NBC which could be finalized within the next two weeks.
I believe the Mountain West is going to have a monster TV contract eventually, and the "Peacock" Network is going to be the reason why.

ATT Uverse has dumped a bunch of standard def regional sports and its an all IPTV distribution system.
