I believe someone on the WAC board stated it perfectly, Comparing which is better the new WAC or the Sunbelt, is like comparing who is prettier Rosanne Barr or Rosie O'donald. The new Wac will just be the Belt west.

Big West version 2.0 seems more accurate.

RE: UL Cajuns to the WAC
Ok, here's the realrpi.com final ranking list comparison of the 'WAC-5' +2 and the SBC's top 7 finishers. Note that Texas State has 82 FCS programs with a higher ending RPI than they. And UTSA has 23 red-shirted freshman on their roster; that's it. And these are the saviours of the WAC???
So this may be an arguement between dwarfs, however, one dwarf is standing in a hole and is still digging.
WAC
La Tech - 73
Idaho - 79
USU - 91
San Jose - 113
NMSU - 114
TxSU - 208
UTSA - 247
SBC
Troy - 59
FIU - 70
ULM - 88
MTSU - 93
ASU - 97
FAU - 106
ULL - 109

More truth in that one statement than almost anything else posted in all the internet.

If it makes you and the WAC leftovers feel better, then that's fine to say, but the fact is that the Belt will be the better football conference the day after the defectors leave. Any objective person will agree.

This is correct.
Picture this:
An all-sports conference that includes Louisiana Tech, Idaho, San Jose State, New Mexico State, Lamar, Texas-San Antonio, and Texas State with non-football affiliates Denver and Utah Valley.
I'm sorry. That is a very UGLY conference. The blind zeal of Ruston will try desperately to equate it to the Sun Belt because of the school's hatred of Wright Waters, but there's just no evidence to support that claim. The WAC is losing the New Mexico Bowl and the Hawaii Bowl. It's primary bid to the Poinsettia will be vacated after 2011 to an indefinite date while the primary bid to the Kraft Fight Hunger is going with FBS Independents over then next three years and probably beyond.
That conference will only have the Humanitarian Bowl which is likely to fold after 2014. No sane or objective person can even remotely compare the new WAC to the current Sun Belt and especially a Sun Belt with South Alabama. That's just foolish talk, blind pride, and ignorance.

It won't happen. There is no way that already financially strapped SJSU and Idaho can afford the travel in that conference, especially considering the additional losses of conference distribution and reduced ticket sales from playing distant non-rivals.
The WAC will probably have to start approaching more Southland schools than just Lamar to survive. Sam Houston State and Stephen F Austin have already said no, but Northwestern State, McNeese, Southeastern Louisiana, and Nichols State may all be suitable targets that could possibly be tricked into joining.

I don't see any of those schools having the funds or support to jump to FBS ball.

And why would a simple fact like that stop Benson?

None of the Louisiana schools would be viable condidates for a conference that spreads to the west coast. Their budgets are even smaller then La Tech, UL or ULM.

And, McNeese is content with being a comparatively big fish in an increasingly smaller pond. Would rather be 1 and done in playoffs then pray for bowl season.
