Some mighty fine regional liquors from a micro-distiller.

Holy jeez. Nearly "angel pissing on your tongue" status. Wish it wasn't a one time brew.

That sounds insanely interesting. I don't think I've ever seen a wheatwine... I'll have to keep my eyes open.

This week I had Great Divide's 16th Anniversary Ale, a barrel-aged DIPA. It was pretty good, some extra oak notes and ester smells... but not markedly different from the Hercules. That's not a bad thing... it just wasn't truly special.

^ If you can find them, these are also great...

Unfortunately, the Founders Nemesis is a one-time brew. So good. Not the cheapest beer ever, but well worth the price.

Not quite as good, but brewed regularly by New Holland.

04-cheers I love Founders. Occasionally I drink good, usually cheap. Had an odd Bell's IPA the other day, it was bland and cost $6. Something like Belgium Cali. Too damn drunk to look it up. Not a good buy IMO. Had the New Holland Mad Hatter that night too. I think the taste of that Bell's ruined it for me, as I've had it before, and liked it. Now, Ithaca Brew Flower Power IPA, nothing extraordinary, but decent flavor and a bite.

RE: What have you been drinking lately?
Thanks for the suggestions. Problem is that I don't live in Michigan... and that seems to be the home of all the good wheatwines. I see that Boulevard made one in their Smokestack series, but I don't think they're making that one anymore (We get those down here... I just had their Saison from that series and it was badass).

Have any suggestions for how I should try to get my hands on one?

Bell's had an issue with at least one batch of their flagship IPA (Two Hearted) resulting in some infected bottles. I actually had one and it came accross as some sort of Belgian IPA. Costing $6, I'm guessing it was on tap somewhere. If you had a batch #, I could look it up.

The website http://www.beeradvocate.com has a whole board dedicated to beer trading. Otherwise, check into sites that ship beer. I'm a little short on time at the moment, but I can do a little legwork for you if you'd like some more information.

You saison sounds good. I'm a huge fan of the style. I just blew my keg of homebrew. As it went I thought, "wow, I didn't share much of that one." Kind of made me assess my summer enjoyment of the barleypop.

I have no idea the batch #, it was draft. Couldn't find it on the website.

RE: What have you been drinking lately?
Bought a 22 oz bottle of Abita's Abbey Ale. I take the initial casual sip and about choked. Was not expecting the rush of flavor and bite. Quite an experience.

Acme California IPA, not the best of IPA's I've had, but still tasty. Liked the California Pale Ale a lot more.

RE: What have you been drinking lately?
This week, I've gone saison mad. From Hennepin to Dupont to Brooklyn's Sorachi Ace, I've been enjoying my explorations of the style.

In addition, I just bought the ingredients to make a home-brewed black IPA. Hope it turns out well!

Got a growler of Half Acre DaisyCutter Pale Ale while I was in Chi-Town.

RE: What have you been drinking lately?
Just a little update on how things are progressing. Just transfered the brew to a secondary fermenter. It already tastes and smells fantastic.

^Looking good. That sight's been too rare in my household lately.

I'm hitting up a brewfest on Saturday. Hopefully I'll have lots of good to report.

Finished the beer and forced carbonated it in the keg. It's freaking fantastic.

Anyway, here's the recipe I used for a 5 gallon extract brew:

Steeping Grains:
0.75 lbs Debittered Black Patent Malt
0.75 lbs 60L Crystal Malt
0.5 lbs Pale Ale Malt

Liquid Malt Extract:
11 lbs Amber Malt Extract

Hops:
3 oz. Chinook for 60 min.
1 oz Amarillo for 10 min.
1 oz. Simcoe for 10 min.
1 oz. Amarillo for dry hopping in secondary
1 oz. Simcoe for dry hopping in the secondary

Yeast:
White Labs California Ale 001

OG ~ 1.08
FG ~ 1.01
ABV ~ 9%
IBU ~ 75
SRM ~ 38

One week in the primary followed by two weeks in the secondary. Very happy with how this turned out.

I've already thrown my next beer into the primary fermenter. It's a Sorachi Ace Saison. If that's good, I'll toss the recipe up here.

Awesome. Thanks for sharing.

I've been away from the equipment way too long. Hoping to do a couple batches this fall to get back in the game.
