How did we get from:

I thought Phantom was great. the music was great, at least. I saw it with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman on broadway, (the only one, wish I could see Les Miz there) and it was flat out amazing. Michael Crawford has a great voice and Sarah Brightman can hit that high C like no one's business. Phantom was a bit predictable, but the music floored me. I have to agree, Les Miz is a masterpiece.

to...

and one other small note... phantom was predictable? it's not like webber wrote the damn story! the story has been around for decades for crying out loud. kinda like saying romeo and juliet was predictable.

Pooh,
Cause my mom told me that I had seen MC and SB before, and I believed her. I guess she was BSing or something.

Also, yeah, I thought it was kinda predictable. I kinda figured the phantom would do something crazy at the end to try to win Christine over. I would have never predicted him disappearing, though.

Also, I listen to the songs from phantom almost daily, so that's where I got the "MC has a great voice and SB can hit the high C (theme)" from.

No offense to fans of musicals or anything, but I just can't stand them. (I must admit my glee at finding 1 more thing I can disagree with Nate on tho

I love music. I really do. But I just can't bear to watch an actor "break into song" in the middle of a scene. I dunno, it rubs me the wrong way. I guess the first 8 minutes of the lion king were mildly amusing.

I've had to suffer through many of the musicals mentioned in this thread in an attempt to be a good husband/boyfriend. I can actually deal with opera a little easier for some reason. Ballet; my wife has been all over me to take her to that.

Sorry, I have to chime in and defend the musical lovers. I'm a huge fan of both music and live theater by themselves -- so obviously I think musicals are awesome.

My two favorites are definitely Phantom and Les Mis. I guess they are two of the biggies and thus many people's favorites, but they're just so damn good! Call Phantom predictable all you want, but I think it's a very unique story. That's part of what draws me to it (that and the music, of course).

Anyway, I've seen both of those in NC... and Damn Yankees on Broadway.

I really hope to see a lot of other shows in my lifetime and grow a greater appreciation for other musicals out there that I haven't been exposed to yet.

I hope no one thought my spar with Nate was an idication that I don't love musicals. I love shows. It's my love of shows that made me realize that the whippersnapper was too young to have seen the show he mentioned.

Les Miz is also my favorite and Phantom was great.. I can agree with that. I have seen three versions of Phantom.. Webber's being the last and newest version.. I might add. The book was written many, many years ago.. it was a movie long before it was a broadway play.. and it was not Webber's creation. That's why I questioned why it was predictable. I guess I assumed that anyone seeing the play would already know the story... maybe I'm wrong.

As for Webber's shows themselves, most true critics would say that he churned out show tunes like the Backstreet Boys churned out bubble gum pop hits. Popular with the pop culture masses, but not with true lovers of show music. I'm not that critical... hey.. look how long Cats ran on broadway!

Brightman left in 1990, was followed briefly by someone whose name I don't remember and then by Katherine Buffaloe (Harris) who was a native of Raleigh and a graduate of the NC School of the Arts. Remarkably, she looks so much like Brightman that she was often mistaken for her at parties and such. The main difference is that her voice is much stronger than Brightman's, which is why she did not immediately follow Brightman when she left. Brightman didn't want her up there looking similar and sounding better.

I love Musicals!

nate-head over to CHHS the first weekend in May-3rd,4th,& 5th. We are staging "My Fair Lady". Not one of my favs but-you will be amazed at the quality of the production.

NCTraffic saw "The Mousetrap" there. Maybe he'll tell you what he thought of it. I'm prejudiced cause my kids are involved. (NCT-which night do you wanna see My Fair Lady?)

BTW-nate-which middle school? We may know you:)

He did a flip off a stage one time at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach and landed right in front of me and started pushing and screaming at me...AWESOME!!

Him and Redman are awesome together (note name under screen name). I've seen them three times now.

Just to contribute to the topic...I went to New York once when I was little and my parents drug me to go see CATS. I actually really really enjoyed it. That's the only musical I've ever enjoyed though.
