I think the teachers did it partially correct. The magazine is inappropriate for kids to be reading in school, especially for a twelve year old, but the suspension wasn't necessary. Just tell him he can't do it and send him out to recess.

what? inappropriate for a 12 year old? it's pictures of women in bikinis. I don't see how it's inappropriate anywhere. You can go to the beach and see the same thing. We might as well make everyone wear baggy shirts and baggy pants, but you have to wear them at your waist.

Dude, you love to take everything and add your little touch to it and try and credit to the original poster. I never said anything about covering up everybody. The fact is that magazines filled with photos of scantily clad women, especially artificially beautiful ones, are inapporpriate material for school. I don't care what his parents give him at home, but it is not suitable for school.

The problem with the beach analogy is that as a parent, I can at least control my kid's exposure to scantily-clad people at the beach by either not going to the beach or going to a more remote one. While one inherrently loses some control over what their kid is exposed to at school (particularly of the public variety), something that is borderline softcore porn really serves no purpose and has no need to be present.

Now, I don't have kids, so I don't know how I would respond in the event that my kid either took an SISS edition to school or saw one because of another kid. I'm pretty moderate in my social views, so I wouldn't freak. That said, I can understand why some parents would, and in the interest of conservativity, would have to lean towards not allowing it. If you want your kid to look at it, let him do it at home, not at school. There is more potential 'harm' done by allowing the magazine in school than disallowing it.

Suspension is slight harsh though.

"That is not sexual harassment. I doubt my 12-year-old is the only one looking at Sports Illustrated," she was quoted as saying.

she is not saying that her kid didnt look, just that he aint the only one that looked

I've got the magazine because I, as a Sports Illustrated subscriber, get the pleasure of seein' chicks in bikinis every year...because of course, the girls who get the magazine LOOOOOVE seeing chicks in bikinis.

To the person who said it is nothing but a bunch of girls wearing bikinis, that isn't true. They don't even wear the bikinis half the time. The top is either off or the bottom is either off. There's one in there where she is completely naked. So I don't understand the whole "swimsuit issue" title anymore.

I say SI makes a guy version of this. Us girls want to see some guys..

i've gotten the siss before and that's all it is. It's not like you see something that's inappropriate in the magazine. Schools allow people to wear abercrombie, but they can't bring this to school. What a load of crap, this stuff isn't harful in any way.

Agreed. This sort of over-reaction only stirs up the animosity between the left and the right.

tell him he can't do what? look at women? It's not like he was picking on someone, he was just looking at a magazine with his friends.

If this kid's household is anything like mine - though I don't have kids - then there is just as risque material in their mailbox on a daily basis from the likes of Victoria Secret.

Sure, take the mag from the kid, but why suspend him? It's not like the mag he brought in had chicks with dicks.

Tell him he can't bring that issue to school. Duh. You do try to make things hard, don't you?

True Story: Boy was 3, Girl was a few months old. We lived in a lovely townhouse in Richmond. I was putting Girl down for a nap and then planned to read to Boy. As I went upstairs I told him to pick out a book. Went back downstairs and Boy was no where to be found. The doors were locked so he wasn't outside. He wasn't in a bathroom. I started to freak out a bit because he was not answering me.

Finally heard a quiet shuffle and looked behind the end table and the sofa. There was Boy looking at the SI Swim suit issue and "reading." I was so relieved but had to cover my mouth and back away as I was about to laugh so hard. He looked so serious. He was really studying the pictures and reading the captions. Still give him grief every year when the swim suit issue comes out for that one :D
