You know I love a good out of the box move so that one has me intrigued.
I just have a gut feeling that Sankey may be looking at Kansas (for basketball), I don't know why but I have felt that for a long time.
If the SEC could get Kansas, UNC and Virginia to go with what we already have - our basketball would be on par with our football and the SEC Basketball tourney would only be rivaled by the NCAA in money generated.
Correct. And it doesn't create an undue burden on a top-heavy power football schedule. It balances it. I'd be fine if we added Kansas, Duke, UNC and Virginia and called it a day. 4 AAUs and 3 national brands.
If the SEC made that move, the Big 10 would most definitely scoop up Florida St and Miami, maybe GT too. Would the SEC be ok if the Big 10 planted a flag in their backyard?
Undoubtedly. While those adds would look good on paper...I would assume it would not move the needle financially and perhaps in the wrong direction (Duke, UVA, Kansas). And, if I'm UVA and Duke...I'd probably hold out for a B1G counter.
UNC is a brand and market add. It enhances. Virginia is a market and academic add. Maybe it breaks even. Duke and Kansas are monster adds when basketball is divorced from the NCAA and hoops values are 2.25 x current. In that world Kansas's hoops valuation of 400 million is worth 900 million and their football 200 million remains the same making them an add on par with Notre Dame in value, but for hoops. Neither Duke, UNC, nor UVa can touch that. Duke however is mid tier SEC in value with hoops x 2.25.
If you are just talking football there are better adds. If you are building value and eyeballs on your product year around these are no brainers.
The SEC already enjoys football depth and dominance. It enjoys the same in baseball. Add UNC, Duke, and Kansas to Kentucky and the conference has the 4 all time winningest programs in college basketball to go with Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, LSU, Auburn, Oklahoma, and Texas. DOMINANCE!
