Keep Your Ears Open at the End of July.... - JRsec - 07-10-2022 06:14 PM

The SEC holds its media days in the third week and the B1G in the fourth week. These are ideal times to introduce the delegations of new members like USC and UCLA, and even a better time when all eyes are upon each conference to meet their audience with big news, or end it that way to keep the press engaged. That news could be details on media deals, conference payout totals, or to announce new additions.

I'm not promising it will be the latter, but we've essentially been rumor and press release free for 4 days. And the brakes on PAC / B12 talks seemed odd. No harm in talking, unless something else has come up.

Do you suspect the SEC is looking West in earnest? Or that such an approach would be purely a negotiating tactic?

You know I love a good out of the box move so that one has me intrigued.

Yeah when the SEC comes out and says "we're staying put at 16 teams for now"...it makes be think there's going to be a major announcement within a week or two.

End of July I hope to finally have a vacation of camping & fishing.

If there is nothing new on the expansion front, that is news also.

What can be kept secret until then? New media deals perhaps.

That PAC/ACC/ESPN coop arrangement certainly will be due for more explanation. If the ACC will not be losing anyone, what are the terms and revenue for the multi-conference media package?

I just have a gut feeling that Sankey may be looking at Kansas (for basketball), I don't know why but I have felt that for a long time.

If the SEC could get Kansas, UNC and Virginia to go with what we already have - our basketball would be on par with our football and the SEC Basketball tourney would only be rivaled by the NCAA in money generated.

Correct. And it doesn't create an undue burden on a top-heavy power football schedule. It balances it. I'd be fine if we added Kansas, Duke, UNC and Virginia and called it a day. 4 AAUs and 3 national brands.

I've felt the same way.

Kansas is one of ESPN's favored programs and being in the SEC will help them stay relevant in the national spotlight. Now that both Missouri and Oklahoma are in the league, KU doesn't seem very much of a stretch at all. And they would be easy to obtain.

I'm not sure about UNC and UVA, but we'll see on that front.

If the SEC made that move, the Big 10 would most definitely scoop up Florida St and Miami, maybe GT too. Would the SEC be ok if the Big 10 planted a flag in their backyard?

Undoubtedly. While those adds would look good on paper...I would assume it would not move the needle financially and perhaps in the wrong direction (Duke, UVA, Kansas). And, if I'm UVA and Duke...I'd probably hold out for a B1G counter...that could include any combination of major southern programs with far greater ROI's. The SEC could quickly find itself outflanked in trying to pull off this maneuver.

UNC is a brand and market add. It enhances. Virginia is a market and academic add. Maybe it breaks even. Duke and Kansas are monster adds when basketball is divorced from the NCAA and hoops values are 2.25 x current. In that world Kansas's hoops valuation of 400 million is worth 900 million and their football 200 million remains the same making them an add on par with Notre Dame in value, but for hoops. Neither Duke, UNC, nor UVa can touch that. Duke however is mid tier SEC in value with hoops x 2.25.

If you are just talking football there are better adds. If you are building value and eyeballs on your product year around these are no brainers.

The SEC already enjoys football depth and dominance. It enjoys the same in baseball. Add UNC, Duke, and Kansas to Kentucky and the conference has the 4 all time winningest programs in college basketball to go with Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, LSU, Auburn, Oklahoma, and Texas. DOMINANCE!

RE: Keep Your Ears Open at the End of July.... - CardFan1 - 07-16-2022 05:46 PM

No guarantee Duke will remain a viable BB option with coach K retired. If Basketball as well as all sports needed insert Louisville over Duke. Kenny Payne will produce

Just curious, but say if ND decides to join the B1G and the B1G stays at 17, would the SEC nab Kansas alone to get to 17 for now until it comes time for the B1G/SEC to grab ACC teams if there is value in adding them? ACC could also look at WVU, Cincy, and UCF for 17 prior to getting raid to create pressure on the Big 12 and maybe PAC-12.

At this stage, I don't think anyone would go with odd numbers. It forces at least one team to have an off-week every week. With the way everyone's talking about more conference games potentially, I think it makes scheduling unnecessarily difficult.

I don't believe the B1G would stand with ND at 17, unless the Irish could only integrate into the conference a little bit at the time because of their various contracts. For scheduling it would be much easier to move to 18. Stanford or UW make sense at that time. Kansas would be available too.

I'm not sure who the SEC would take if any. Kansas would be the only unaffiliated school which would have an expiring GOR and we are saving more slots for the ACC than the Big 10 would be. A second Florida school is a likely priority but the ones which are available are 10 years away in development. If pressed to add anyone, which we aren't, maybe Kansas & Baylor, but that's way down the priority list. I'm 99% sure we stick at 16 if the ACC is unavailable.

Sure b/c I think adding those schools would be detrimental to all parties. The B1G would be better off focusing on UVA, UNC and Duke.

I don't expect Notre Dame will be moving anytime soon. If they can land network revenue supplements that are in, or very close to, the ballpark among the elite power schools, they'll continue their ACC affiliation and remain officially fb independent.

I don't see conference busters, right now, in the ACC ready to go out on a limb and challenge the GoR. Notre Dame, technically, may have an invitation in hand from the BIG. Settling with the ACC along with other contractual matters, and convincing their constituents the BIG is the route to take, may not be the right moment to pursue. Notre Dame knows they can wait and ponder multiple options further.
