The Miami teams that Butch Davis constructed at the turn of the Millenium were really something, as good as the best Jimmy Johnson/Dennis Erickson teams of a decade earlier.
They were so good that a bum coach like Larry Coker was able to ride them to a national title in 2001 and within a hair of another in 2002, but truth is, Miami was probably the best team three straight years, 2000 - 2002.
Honestly, Larry Coker was pretty good. He ended up an .800 coach (60-15) with only 1 sub-9 win season in 6 years. Firing Coker sucked Miami into the never ending cycle of switching coaches every few years to get back what Coker had.
Coker deserved a better second opportunity than a start-up program.
