OT: NCAA lineal champion - jhasting - 08-30-2018 01:31 PM

collegefootballbelt.com website no longer exists. This website developed a college football championship 'belt' that started with the OU-Nebraska "game of the century" winner as the initial champion and the belt changing hands when the holder was defeated.

I had W/L database of games from 1869 and recreated this lineal championship starting with the first game between Princeton and Rutgers Enhanced the results to indicate when a game was a bowl game or neutral site game. The results were enhanced to show consecutive weeks of belt changing hands without the current holder winning, ex.) 4 weeks from 10/9/2010 -> 10/30/2010 had the belt change every week throughout the SEC.

AP ranking and elo ranking included for each matchup

Pretty cool. A Rensselaer fan on the USCHO board has something similar going, but with something like a dozen belts for college hockey. One for Michigan schools, Ivy League ones, D2 play-ups, stuff like that.

Does this have anything to do with the fact that Pitt plays Penn State next week? 07-coffee3

Pittsburgh retains lineal championship after week 1 win over Albany 33-7

Don't let it fall into AAC hands, could end up floating around the FCS for a few years...

Looks like the Title Belt is about to make its way into the Big Ten. How long will Penn State hold on?

They have Ohio State, Michigan State, and Wisconsin all at home this season. That's a huge gift from the schedule maker.

Very, very neat. Has not been in the Big Ten since OSU lost to Florida in 2006. Hope makes its way back this week.

Penn State has 2 lineal title wins after capturing from Pittsburgh in Week 2. (Kent State & Illinois).

Penn State plays Ohio State for the lineal championship this week in State College. PSU and OSU played for the lineal championship one time during Ohio State's last reign from 9/9/2006-11/18/2006. Ohio State has not played for the lineal championship since losing it to Florida in the BCS national championship game 1/8/2007.

So this "belt" now belongs to Purdue, right?

Ohio State beat Penn State
Purdue beat Ohio State

Yes, funny how the Penn State fan posted about this "lineal belt" before PS played a hapless Pitt team he knew that take this invisible "belt" from, and then updated us when PS 'defended' it against bad opponents, but radio silence about it once PS lost to Ohio State, LOL.

Thanks for reminding us. 04-cheers

RE: OT: NCAA lineal champion - jhasting - 10-26-2018 06:37 AM

Sorry, thought this thread was dead, I posted a few updates over several weeks with no activity until now. The links in the original post have been constantly maintained. have been working on this program long before PSU won and continue to work on it after PSU lost. In the last few weeks I collected more data and enhanced the program to include both the champion and opponent conference in each game. This makes it possible to determine the conference record, Ex.) the W-L record for the Pac-12 is
PCC 25 - 28
Pac 8 39 - 25
Pac 10 137 - 101
Pac 12 0 - 4
I am now collecting AP rankings to add to the results with the effort to determine how many high ranking matchup games (like PSU-OSU) are in the lineal history.

RE: OT: NCAA lineal champion - jhasting - 10-29-2018 06:35 AM

Michigan State is now lineal champion after beating Purdue 23-13. MSU plays Ohio State next.
The shortest time between reigns was accomplished by Baylor in 1991. Baylor was playing the 5th game of their 2nd reign and they lost to Rice on 10/12/1991, the next game Rice lost to TCU, and the following game Baylor beat TCU to being their 3rd reign. This happened one other time by Missouri in 1926, Ohio State can become the third team to accomplish the 3 game turn around with a win this week,

Ohio State retains lineal championship after Maryland failed 2pt conversion in OT. Final regular season lineal championship game of 2018 : #4 Michigan @ #10 OhioState

Michigan last played for the lineal championship on 11/18/2006 where #2 Michigan lost to lineal champion #1 Ohio State 42-39. Michigan last won a game as the lineal champion on 11/22/2003 when #5 Michigan beat #4 Ohio State 35-21 (Michigan lost the lineal championship their next game to USC in the Rose Bowl)

The lineal champion will play in the B1G championship game for the 1st time, and give Northwestern a chance to win the lineal championship for the first time since 10/31/1936 and their 2nd overall reign.
