I presume most of the JMU student body and alumni are from middle Atlantic states and would have little interest in ties to a conference centered on the Gulf coast. It'd be the same for App St if they were in the MAC which is why I'm glad we're in the Belt. We do have a nice rivalry with them and they are similar to us in many ways other than the non-Southern ties.
Saw a comparison on Virginia colleges just the other day. Only 33% of JMU's students are from outside the state.

Can you buy sweet tea in Harrisonburg, VA? If so then there isn't much of a culture clash, get them in the Belt. If not, lets move on.

Yes, you certainly can.

The western side of Va, much like NC, is more southern than other parts of the state.
