only one for sure FBS spot left - statefanatic - 04-07-2014 10:44 AM

All these FCS schools are starting to talk FBS when only one for sure spot is left. Who gets that last spot? EKU, Liberty, JMU, Lamar, and MSU All want to go FBS. The Sun Belt has a big decision to make and one of these teams could be lucky enough to be the last FCS to FBS move for some time.

I could see Idaho eventually leaving the Belt and creating another spot but that could be several years from now. It seems 12 is the magic number now that the CFP has started. I don't see CUSA adding any teams even if they lose two. I think the MAC is ok staying at 12. The MWC seems ok at 12. I just don't see any major realignment opening any spots for any more FCS teams.

One for sure spot left and seveal teams wanting in. Who is ready and willing to make that move today. We all know the answer but most aren't willing to accept it. Liberty will get that last FCS to FBS spot.

Who cares if they are ready today. Why would we be in a rush and just hand it out. FAU and FIU weren't really ready either but it worked out.

Man do I ever hope you are right!

The Sun Belt holds the golden ticket for sure. What's the deal with Idaho anyways? Has the Sun Belt promised them anything? Why are they even here?

Idaho is here because they were a previous Sun Belt member and would have given the Belt 12 teams. WKU decided to go to CUSA leaving us with 11 teams. I don't think Idaho will last very long at the FBS level. The Sun Belt won't kick them out. We will have to wait for them to leave on there own.

Because there was a time when the Sun Belt was on the verge of not having enough football playing members to keep an FBS league going. I think NMSU and Idaho were added to solidify a 7 team league (two schools were transitioning and two schools had yet to be invited).

RE: only one for sure FBS spot left - MWC Tex - 04-07-2014 10:56 AM

I really think UMass is the 12 team (fb-only) for the Sunbelt. When Idaho finally realizes they need to go FCS, then another spot will open up.
If the Big 12 goes to 12, then I see Cincy/Memphis gone from the AAC, AAC raids Charlotte and ODU. C-USA stays at 12 as well as the Sunbelt.

That is not the case. Idaho was not needed to keep the league going in FBS.

To me, in that area, MTSU seems a more solid athletic program than Charlotte. ODU, like UTSA, has a lot of FBS potential but after the first class graduates, it will be interesting to see how these programs reload. As far as 12 members is concerned, I would agree that C-USA would stay at 12 for a while if further realignment occurs.

You forgot about the willing part. Liberty is the only school willing to make the move now. JMU has decided it is MAC or bust. MSU is a couple years from willing to make the move. EKU is the same as MSU. Then we have Lamar who may be willing but nobody wants them.

Liberty is the only school who is willing and ready now. That is why they will be the 12th member. The Belt wants a CCG next year and that require a team be announce this year.

That is dumb. To take the first available just to have an extra year or two of a championship game of questionable value.

You're probably right; there was a time of uncertainty 18-24 months ago where there was concern about having time to process the FCS schools to maintain eligibility given certain realignment scenarios though.

Don't act like Liberty is only being taken because they are willing. They will bring a lot to the table. They may not be who folks want now, but you will be pleasantly surprised when you give LU time.

RE: only one for sure FBS spot left - LUcanesfan - 04-07-2014 11:10 AM

I definitely believe that Idaho is a short-term plan for the Sun Belt.

I'm not sure if NMSU and its new president want to stay in FBS or drop down. However, I do think for basketball's sake they will remain in FBS.

I believe that UMass is concerned with traveling fees and its football program, therefore I doubt if they would even take a FB-only invite.

Exactly, it seems they were a premature add as if the conference were going to die without adding them. Was that really the thinking? I wasn't following the Sun Belt as closely then as I do now, so I'm just trying to figure out the justification for adding a team that's so far out of the footprint.

Then tell me who else we should be waiting for! A MSU who may not want to move there oly sports to the Belt, JMU who has shown they do not want to join the Belt, or EKU who dreams of FBS but may never actually make the move. That leave Lamar and Liberty. Between those two who do you choose? If you chose Liberty over Lamar the go ahead and add them now.

Religion and politics aside, Liberty athletics is just as good as the other teams on this list. This is a sports forum. If you want to argue religion and politics then find a forum other than sports to argue your point.

Is being a former member really the reason for Idaho. Lamar is a former SBC member.

How about being a former member who was already FBS! Is that better? I would hate for Lamar to get there feelings hurt!

Lamar was never a football member.

But I don't buy the former member hypothesis. Simple matter of at the time Idaho got the league to 12 in football and while the travel isn't great, Sun Belt schools were already scheduling them home/home in non-conference so the football travel wasn't that big of a concern.

No football only arrangement has ever lasted more than 14 years (though I expect Hawaii/MWC to break that mark eventually) and of the 24 football only agreements ever executed only two have lasted more than 7 years.

It is very unlikely Idaho will be in the Sun Belt come 2020 either by choice of the league or choice of Idaho but the odds are against it.

Contrary to theory that is one golden ticket left, I think there are as many as three and as few as 2. One to be Sun Belt 12th full member, one to be full member 13 replacing Idaho, one to be full member 14 replacing NMSU... unless NMSU gets the full member spot.

You are probably right about Idaho, but I bet their fans sure get tired of hearing that from the rest of us. Should be lots of "tackling fuel" for them!

In regards to NMSU staying FBS, why is that so important to their Basketball program? Front porch and exposure? I mean since there is no separation in D1 for Basketball and they already have their basketball in another conference.

As far as UMass and a football only invite, why would they want an invite for the other sports? I thought the reason that they are getting kicked out of the MAC is because they refused to move those sports from their current conference to the MAC. Is that not right? Seems they want a only football invite, and not the opposite. I can see them going back to FCS. One note however is that IF we did take them (football only), we wouldn't have to wait for them to transition. Still, they aren't going to out of the MAC till 2015 anyway if I remember correctly, so that doesn't really help even IF we were thinking CCG this year or bust. I'm fine waiting on a transitional team IF they start NOW!

Note: Lots of decent options out there imop. JMU being number 1 - sure hope they jump. Liberty #2 in my book. Delaware, Chattanooga are worth looking at imop in addition to the regulars mentioned. I'd love to have the state of Tenn back in the footprint, and UD has a lot to offer although out of pocket.
