I think the portal is pretty much working at intended.
One purpose was to give those who are not getting PT the opportunity to look for greener grass.
Some may wish to move up to a higher level of competition.
Another purpose is to give grad transfers the opportunity to choose their grad school. Makes sense. Many/most students don't attend undergrad/grad at the same school.
Most obvious case, John Q Player wants to be a lawyer, doctor, dentist, etc. and doesn't have that opportunity at EMU.
Miscellaneous like move closer to home, doesn't like his program of study at his current school, etc.

It adds another vector of coaching. can you recruit hs players, juco players, AND players from other schools. small sample size but CC seems to be effective and identifying and recruiting talent from other 4 year institutions.

Carson Steele is transferring to UCLA. Can't say I'm sad to see him leave the MAC...

Those recruiting rankings have indeed been diminished as well as finding the HS "diamond in the rough". MAC coaches are better off getting a solid but unspectacular Samson Evans from Iowa, while Western's Chase Brown and Carson Steele go elsewhere. It is a different world.

RE: 2022 Transfer Portal / Post Dec. Signing Day
Eastern lands guard Chris Mayo! A transfer from West Virginia with three years left.
https://twitter.com/chris_mayo76/status/...8014838785
A big time get! He was a high three star on 247 and a four star on rivals from New Jersey, he'd be our biggest recruit ever had he come right out of high school. He had offers from Kentucky, Purdue, Arizona State, Auburn, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wake Forest before committing to West Virginia. Once he announced he was transferring he had offers from basically everyone in the MAC.
He didn't play his first two years and neither of them counted against his eligibility (COVID year and then a redshirt year). This year he saw action in one game as a RS freshman.
With losing both Sow and Bates this is a big boost to the O-line.

Very big get for us. Edified called this a short while back. Not sure how Edified knows all this, but he is plugged in and I certainly appreciate it.
With Johnson leaving and Bates and Sow graduating this is a major addition we needed.
We still Dooley and Howie and hopefully Mayo is close to as good as they are. We still need others to step up. Dmitri? Rewolinski? McAdams? Strey?

Samson should have 0 problems rushing
He is a lock for first team All-MAC

I love hearing that Edified, and I want to be an optimist. Is Mayo as good as Johnson? I'm just wondering about other players being able to have the same production as those leaving. I think Dooley and Howie are great but there's a lot of question marks, no?

Asking another question: Does Dooley stay at RT or move over to LT?
Just because Dooley has played RT doesn't mean he isn't or can't play LT.

Based on what I have gathered Dooley stays at right tackle and Chris Mayo starts at left

That is great to hear! I had seen Mayo listed as a guard so I figured he might help ease the blow of losing two guys in the interior (Sow and Bates). The fact that he has moved to tackle makes him a strong candidate to replace Johnson.

I'm not sure Steve but I think we will add at least another OL transfer as Edified has suggested in a previous post. Whether that will be a starter I don't know. Don't forget Carson Lee who sat out this year.
