Side effect of Texas pushing aside Augie Garrido last week. They didn't want to lose him to a $1M job. College baseball coaching salaries are crazy, since they can' t be generating the same revenues as football and basketball. Obscene salary levels for all of these coaching positions when put in perspective.
Some of these coaches at the Power 5 conference programs get those salaries from the help of donations to the universities as well.
A program like Texas has stadium that holds almost 7,000 and they play a lot of home games.

In the same article that reported the UVA Baseball coach's salary it was mentioned that UVA plans to spend $13 Million to upgrade and improve the baseball facilities; included in this is 1,000 more seats, bringing the seating capacity to 6,000 and the addition of luxury suites.

The last several posts illustrate what we're up against. It isn't just the Big 5 conferences either. Places like ECU, Wilmington, GA Southern, etc. all draw significantly more fans than the Tribe. Let's face it though.....Williamsburg isn't really a sports town. We can't even get the youth league teams and their parents to attend the college events on a regular basis.

32 some the lack of attendence by youth teams and parents has to do with scheduling . Back when 1:30 was the kickoff time for all football games it was almost impossible for families to attend Tribe games because many of the youth leagues be it football, soccer, t-ball, or whatever else , would end at 1 ish. Saturday afternoon basketball games seem to mainly have a start time of 2 pm and yes, TV dictates starting times but, once again there are youth groups that have activities then and there would be bigger crowds on a Saturday night in January or Feburary .

The town and gown syndrome rears its ugly head. It's been that way for decades. One thing about scheduling for baseball; those early season games played in miserable weather cry for going south or west. The trip to SoCal this year was a step in the right direction. Let's do more of that. Attendance is built one step at a time. It takes some imagination.

RE: NCAA Regional
We made tremendous progress with men's basketball...there were many more kids at the games this season than see in recent years. Good deals for kids tickets (groups), proactive starting times for games (afternoon),
and the exciting, attractive basketball all contributed.
In football we should see many more kids at the games with the "family friendly" emphasis coming with the
revamped stadium...there will be many more food stations in the stadium and family oriented activities built around the games.
Baseball is tough to attract families in February and much of March...cold and windy. However, attracting
ACC and other name schools will help and work is being done on making this happen with greater regularity.

I'm not just making this stuff up, BTW. My son works for IMG in ticket sales and promotions for one of the big SEC schools and one of his big group sales for football come from boy scouts and cub scouts. Of course they are selling the seats in games that aren't popular, but think about the math. Selling discounted group tickets gets more people at the games and you still increase revenue. If you get 10-20% of the kids and parents to come to one more game you are ahead of the game and spent nothing incremental to market the team.

You nailed it. I have been sponsoring groups from the Boys and Girls clubs to Saturday afternoon games at the Kaplan for years. Three a year. It's not a problem; lots of cooperation from the Dept Coach Tony and others. The same could be done for baseball and soccer. Some of you guys with local connections can make this happen.

Can you get your son to do some pro-bono work for dear-ol-dad's alma mater? Our biggest weakness is advertising the product. ODU is very aggressive with their advertising. There are constant ads for group tickets, groupons, etc. I dont subscribe to the Daily Press, but I imagine that youve just got to hit that hard with ads/coupons.
Build the brand and the following...then you can worry about actually making money.

RE: NCAA Regional
We play FCS football for cost control purposes. This helps us to conserve capital and operating expenses and flows down hill to our other sports programs, but it you can never save your way into prosperity without expanding the top line.
The College is becoming more aggressive in soliciting donations , which is one way to expand the top line. The other way is to expand ticket sales through marketing.
As I learned at the College the P's of marketing are Product, Pricing, Promotion/Packaging and Place. Product and Place have been/ are being improved, particularly in Baseball and Football. Basketball (both men's and women's) have made significant steps forward in Product.
At this point the low hanging fruit to further expand the top line would seem to be Pricing and Promotion/Packaging.

I may be wrong, but more money on basketball marketing would mean less on recruiting, coaches, etc. I think that's the biggest hurdle to expanding the advertising.

That would depend upon whether or not the advertising/promotions generates more revenue, wouldn't it?

RE: NCAA Regional
For basketball here's easy math.
12 home games, sell 1,000 more tickets each game for $10 each and you've raised $120,000. That pays for an assistant coach.
You are never going to get a lot of results this way unless we can consistently average 5,000 fans per game. We have a winning program that appears to be sustainable at this point. No reason we shouldn't average more than that given the population in the greater Williamsburg and Newport News area.
Once you get that fan base the real money is in concessions, merchandise, etc. We should be trying to get $10-20 per person in revenue from those.
We should consider hosting a tournament at some point once we get enough fans.

We all know concessions at basketball games have been a joke. I once missed a large portion of a game waiting in line, and do not do concessions there anymore. The word is that as part of the Zable upgrade the concessions will be improved, will hope that is the case. We miss out on a lot of $$ when we have folks on site and we are not marketing merch. in a good way. It is not always in the cards for families to make their way down to the Bookstore for Tribe gear. My kids love shirts and hats, and the kiosks in Zable do not always have their sizes. Looking forward to se what the new Zable features relative to food and merch.

We're hijacking this thread at this point, although I don't mind being reminded that we won the loser's bracket in the NCAA Regional.
If we can figure out how to get another 1000 paying fans in the door without spending money, I think our athletic department will do it.
