So proud of these guys. I hadn't planned on spending most of my weekend watching Tribe baseball, but I'm glad I did. The character of this team was on display all weekend. Hanging on in the 9th to beat UVA, after what they did to us on Friday, was especially sweet.

This is all good. So many of the deficiencies in Tribe baseball come from players who just aren't that good. The comebacks etc are a reflection of the coaching. If this guy had better players, his teams would be that much better. I too hope he stays, but the call is out there.
I hope we market this and build the attendance at Plumeri. Tribe baseball is great entertainment. Now, if we can just find a way to get the fresh Mexican cuisine along with beer and wine at the concession at the Plumeri, we will be in business. By the way, Mexicans love the game and there a bunch living in the area. Vamos a placticar con ellos.

I wish there was a way to put the baseball stadium on campus, student attendance would skyrocket.

I've always thought this. Plumeri is gorgeous and SUCH an improvement over what we had. But I often wish they could just move it brick by brick to campus.

UNCW got on the board first but fell 10-1. They'll play the Cocks again tomorrow at 6pm.

Knock down the Laycock Building, put in a diamond, no permanent seating, batting cage under the renovated west stands, no fence .... missing anything?

Oh yes, allow the outfield to be used to park cars during home football games.

Students can stand on the top row of the west stands of Cary, and watch baseball, and men's lacrosse at the same time on the football field.

Just turn back the clock ... thirty or forty years.

I think you will find that baseball was getting kicked off campus, and in danger of getting dropped ... the off-campus stadium saved the program. A return to campus is just not in the cards.

William and Mary got some national publicity over the past ten days in a sport in which the CAA is a better conference than the A-10, a sport which binds the southern half of the CAA, a sport which fits the academic mission of the school, and a sport in which W&M has made the NCAA tournament several times, and played well in said tournament. It is an interesting development for the program, and athletic department as a whole.

While I know UVa's pitching was "off" today, that is the nature of the regional part of the Road to Omaha, and for Tribe baseball to have eliminated the defending national champion, at their place, in a post-season NCAA tourney, well, not sure how many times that has happened, in any sport, in the long history of the College. Tremendous accomplishment!

I couldn't help thinking of Marv Levy's characterization of his W&M football team, which I believe applies to all Tribe athletics teams, then and now - tremendous over-achievers!

Final point.

The year is over. Graduation has come and gone.

This thread is five days old, and has close to 11,000 views.

There's a value in that for the College.

RE: NCAA Regional
Think with no minor league baseball in Williamsburg, a little creative energy put into the local entertainment value of weekend series (simple promotions and between inning fan entertainment involving students) they could capture the momentum and easily grow the community fan base going forward.

There is some talent getting added to a young, experienced team returning next year, including 3B/RHP David Angstadt, who has teammates committed to UVA and NC State, and yet, Angstadt was voted Prep League POY, as well as, VISAA 1st Team All-State.

Today, for me, will rank right there with our football wins in C-ville.

The hard part for any athletic program is that, along with the successes, comes future expectations.

We return a good amount of our starters next season, so we should improve. Gould and Gaouette are significant losses and J. Smith kind of hurts but the rest of the team comes back besides them

So, in a nutshell:
1) the players aren't really that good
2) no way a coach is going to stay at W&M now with a small taste of success
3) we need to recruit Mexicans to our baseball games

What a weird takeaway from a remarkable 2 weeks with the baseball program and Tribe athletics overall.

I agree with BT, this was one of the big moments in Tribe sports.

Great press as well.

Nice job Tribe!

RE: NCAA Regional
I've stayed pretty connected to baseball over the last 40 or so years including when I played so I have a decent perspective. We had a run with coach Farr that started out in a similar fashion. By the time he established the program we had kids who were drafted fairly high and a few had more than a cup of coffee in the big leagues. We couldn't pay him and so he left. The last time I checked, we don't pay our head coach anywhere close to 100k. We lost the guy before Murphy because of the money. Plain and simple.

I don't buy the lack of talent stuff either. We've had a lot of talent come through the program in the last 15 years. This team definitely overachieved, but they weren't supposed to be any good this year. What we just witnessed was a wonderful run at the right time of year. Nobody on these boards, and I mean nobody would have predicted this on April 1.

Now here's the real question. How much money can we give to the baseball program right now before June 30? I'm sending my $2500 in just like I do every year. We did something similar in support of the hoops summer school stuff. Give $100 or more. They take CC payments on line. Just go to the Tribe Club web site and select baseball as the recipient.

BTW, the stadium is on campus, just not the part where everyone wants it to be including me. That area is turning into a fun place to watch more the baseball if you are into soccer and lacrosse.

I have been a Boston Red Sox fan for 40 years at this point and other than the brief regional run against NC State a few years ago, never paid any attention to Tribe baseball. Hopefully, that changes now after the last 2 weekends. As for the stadium, I will check it out on my next Williamsburg trip. I never lived at Dillard, but the concept of a short car or bus ride is not a big deal at most colleges and universities. The big issue is having nice facilities. From what has been said, the stadium is a major upgrade from the past. Other than basketball, we will have made decent upgrades to all facilities in the last 15 years.

I was really impressed by how the team played and also the comments from Coach Murphy(still want to call him the manager) and the players. In my time since I decided to go to W&M, 2009-2010 was the best athletic season I have seen, but 2015-2016 rivals it. Would love to see 2016-2017 be the best ever. I guess baseball closes the year each year and it begins with the fall sports. Really enjoyed the games and the great comments here. Thanks for 2 great weekends of entertainment and Tribe Pride.

I am in for Charleston next year for the basketball tournament. Where is the baseball tourney for the CAA next year?

Wilmington. The following 2 years (2018-19) it will be hosted by JMU in Harrisonburg.

Just out of curiosity, how does W&M's baseball venue, Plumari Stadium, compare with other CAA baseball venues?? I have been to Plumari but have no experience with any of the other CAA baseball parks.

Cool, road trip to Wilmington, Delaware. Brandywine Valley is comfortable in early June.

Just to be clear, remember that in order to host, sites must submit bids to do so. I'm not sure if W&M has ever submitted a bid to do so, but I'm sure the league office would consider it if they did so, as that would be a relatively central location like JMU.

I read in the Daily Press this morning that the UVA Baseball Coach was rewarded with a $275,000 "Retention Bonus" - this was in addition to his annual salary of $630,000 per year under his long term contract.

Side effect of Texas pushing aside Augie Garrido last week. They didn't want to lose him to a $1M job. College baseball coaching salaries are crazy, since they can' t be generating the same revenues as football and basketball. Obscene salary levels for all of these coaching positions when put in perspective.
