Departing teams - UNT15 - 11-11-2021 11:24 AM
Will any of the 9 departing teams leave early?
I lean towards the answer being "no". It seems like the American will make the 6 wait, but if one team (or 3 teams) left early, it would allow the AAC to go back to evenly split divisions next year. I genuinely hope North Texas administration looks into it ( we could use the money earmarked for baseball

I am curious what was the main reason that 9 teams left in the first place.

There's lots of reasons and each school surely had different priority lists.

Word in Huntington is that we are very likely leaving a year early and will be entering the Sunbelt around July 1st of 2022 as will ODU and Southern Miss. By leaving early the move will ensure that our schools will only miss out on $1.5 Million of conference revenue held back by CUSA for the exit fee. And the good news is that the newly renegotiated Sunbelt TV deal will come in between $2 and $2.5 Million per year (not including conference revenue) so the bump we get from that one year will almost cover the loss of $1.5 in conference revenue from CUSA for the 21-22 season.
Look for an official announcement sometime around the first of the year once everything is finalized. The Sunbelt commissioner is already submitting the paperwork to the NCAA for Sunbelt soccer sponsorship to begin next season. Look for UK, WVU, South Carolina and UCF to join the conference for soccer as well. Also look for JMU to leave a year early with Marshall/ODU and Southern Miss scheduling JMU in "out of conference" football match-ups next season so they can get the required number of FBS games needed to start the transition.

I can only speak for Marshall but I think ODU and Southern Miss will agree.
We left for:
Better Conference leadership
Better TV Exposure with ESPN. No more Facebook games.
Better Football Conference
Better Regional Rivalries
Better Travel situation for Student Athletes
Better TV and Conference Revenue Sharing
Reduced Cost in travel and expenses
More Stable Conference

Thanks for the info. I had wondered about WVU (and CUSA soccer affiliates).
It really seems to make sense for JMU to move early, especially since they are not eligible for conference auto-bids in the CAA

Absolutely. And it actually works out good for Southern Miss and ODU as well since both have Liberty on their schedule for next year which they will replace with JMU.
Its also good for Liberty (to drop Southern Miss/ODU) to shed games so that they can enter CUSA conference play in 2022. Liberty also has New Mexico State on the schedule for next year who is also going to CUSA so it works out good. Go figure!

Did not know when the announcement would come, but also told to expect to be SBC in 2022.

Hopefully, Southern Miss, Marshall, and Old Dominion will be gone after this academic year. It feels like it would be a wasted year to have a bunch of teams in your conference that are apathetic about being there.

There is no reason for Marshall, Southern Miss and ODU to have a 21 month divorce, 9 months should be plenty. Marshall has done the 21 month thing once already and it wasn't good for either side. Marshall announced they were leaving the MAC in 2003 and didn't start play in CUSA until 2005. Things got quite tense with with fans, coaches and admin of the MAC.
There is absolutely nothing holding us three back from leaving early.

I mean if there was room in the AAC for the other 6 teams, they'd be looking to jump sooner rather than later as well.

It appears the 3 leaving for the Sun Belt will be gone for the 2022 football season, but the AAC bound schools will still be here, and none of the adds will have joined yet. Maybe NMSU and/or Liberty could join early to balance out numbers? Not sure how, or if, that could work. Just will be interesting to see how CUSA handles next football season if these moves start taking place prior to '23.

Which works fine, the AAC has been doing it for two years since UConn left. It does require a waiver to hold a championship game.
In that scenario would 1, or 3 of the new AAC teams move early to balance out both leagues?
