Bowl contracts are done in 6 years cycles. And your bowl spots are based on eligible teams during that cycle. When this cycle originally kicked in, we were a much smaller conference and 4-5 bowl teams seemed about right. Putting 12 teams in this year will probably grant us 7 or 8 bowl tie ins for the future.

However, its worth noting that the quality of opponent may not be particularly amazing. P5 leagues are largely moving away from bowl tie ins against G5 leagues. I would expect a lot of CUSA and AAC matchups in those 8 bowls with mayble 1 MWC and MAC matchup.

Hopefully we can steal a couple tie-ins from other G5s and/or pick up a couple from Pac-12 (though I'd expect most just shift to the remaining P4).

I haven't really thought about it but it will be interesting to compare the number of P4/5 vs G5 bowls after the next contract cycle compared to the current one. Starting next year, 11 of the top P4 teams aren't going to a non-NY6/playoff bowl, which is 7 more of the top P4's out of the best non-NY6/playoff bowls.

Yeah I get that and I don't blame Gill for that either. I guess I should have said that I hope we get a better bowl game for our highest ranked team if they miss the CFP. I don't mind our other bowls that much.

These days it doesn't really matter. When the SBC first started playing football, there was 26 bowls, with only one tie-in. With so few bowls, only 52 teams out of the 120 or so teams could go bowling, so several sat home, especially those that didn't have enough conference tie-ins. Now that there are 41 bowls, there's usually not enough bowl eligible teams to fill them. So, if your conference doesn't have enough tie-ins, some other conference won't fill all their slots, so there's somewhere to go.

With 41 bowls and 82 teams we need to end tie-ins and create the best matchups.

For JMU and Jacksonville State to nab a birth, these remaining 5-6 teams must lose.

Virginia Tech
Syracuse
Navy (vs Army)
USF
Rice
TCU
BYU
UCF
Illinois
Minnesota
Nebraska
Army (vs Navy)
NIU
Central Michigan
Eastern Michigan
Utah State
Colorado State
Cal
Washington State
Florida
South Carolina
Mississippi State
ODU
Marshall
Louisiana

Updated Bowl Math so far:

Eastern Michigan gives the MAC an extra slot defeating 3-8 Buffalo. (Somehow Buffalo was favored here)

Miss State lost to Ole Miss leaving Birmingham Bowl open.

TCU trails Oklahoma in the 2nd quarter
Nebraska trails Iowa early
Central Michigan keeping Toledo off the board. Scoreless approaching half.

Magic Numbers:

10 more losses puts JMU in a bowl (Including Sun Belt losses)
10 more losses by OOC teams opens up possibility of 12 SBC Bowl bids.

Toledo and Oklahoma have opened up large leads against Central Michigan and TCU respectively. Iowa and Nebraska is still tight.

Marshall isn’t looking good as Ark St seems to have turned the corner.

ULL should get to six.

ODU is 50/50.

The AAC is doing there part to allow a bowl path for JMU so thanks to those 10 schools.

ULL should get to 5.
It all depends which team shows up. Louisiana against stAte or Southern Miss, I’d agree. Louisiana against South or Troy, y’all don’t stand a chance. This team is as inconsistent as it gets…Cajuns get to 6.
How many times have we been fighting for bowl eligibility and y'all ended our hopes? Well, turnabout is fair play. LOL

While I hope we win next weekend, because it would be horrible to lose to ULM two years in a row, I REALLY do not want to see us in a bowl game.

If we go to a crap bowl as a 6-6 team, then end up winning, there will be constant sunshine pumping and talks of "look how this staff and program is now progressing" all over campus and the Cajuns athletic complex.

At this point, this staff needs some self-reflection. There is plenty of talent on our team, at least enough that we should not be 5-6 at this point. Our current coaching staff is 2-8 in one score football games. There's a constant there, bowl eligibility or not, that says something isn't right.

Fans NEVER root for their teams to lose. NEVER.

RE: Let's Talk Bowls following Week 12 / Bowl Projections
Toledo beats Central Michigan by 14
Iowa holds off Nebraska by 3 (Nebraska was actually favored here)
Oklahoma is up 4 Touchdowns on TCU Late

The magic Number is now 7 for Max SBC teams and for JMU to bowl.

The last 5-6 team to play today is Utah State which is about to kickoff at 4-7 New Mexico. Utah State is 4.5 point favorites.
