No one has ever argued that Emoni Bates was a good defender. But I have repeatedly argued that the whole team are bad defenders. And the Su stack article references this as well. I would go so far as to say Emoni Bates, for all his defensive flaws, is actually the best defender on the team. If someone did an article on any other team member, there would be the same video clips of an opponent blowing by the defender, poor help defense, and late run out to the open three. Everyone. It is really bad state of affairs.

If we have only one scholie it should go to an experienced center who can defend the rim block shots and rebound.

I completely agree with this. Not necessarily hopeful we land one thiugh.

Nobody here is missing the point, all the comments can be defended.

Watch Toledo vs Kent in the MACC game. Kent was less talented from a pure basketball standpoint but was so much more active on the defensive end of the court and on the glass. They commit fouls at much the same rate we do, but they are "Lovejoy" fouls, a result of aggression that is good defense, rather than being out of position as we often are especially underneath. Kent expends perspiration.

In Stan's first season, I thought we played with energy on defense. That may have been due to Spottsville and McBride's previous Murphy training. Nevertheless, the Scotts' also acquitted themselves well with no Murph indoctrination. Golson also was much better last season. It is indeed a sad state of affairs.

I think we return 7 out of our top 8 players. We need a center/rim protector/rebounder next season! I see us winning 18-20 games next year if this happens! Thankfully, weren't dealing with C Michigan problems. All their starters basically our transferring out! This is Heath's year to show us he's an experienced amazing coach, He won 20 games A few seasons! This past season was abysmal, so hopefully next season our trajectory will change..........

Thanks for the heads up, Glory! First Miller and now Bass? A couple big hits for CMU.

Also, regarding the center position, it would indeed be nice to nab such a player. But sometimes these things are easier said than done. If EMU can’t land such a player, I would prefer Coach Heath play Billingsley and Randle as the primary Centers to maximize use of their height. Keep Legend and Golson as the primary PFs.

Yeah, Ramy after years of dominant center play from Riley, JT4 and Toure, we placed our order for more and got James Love and Axel Okongo, a whoops for sure! Those guys don't grow on trees as you alluded to.

Our frontcourt situation is absolute chaos.

Jihad is soft, but the best shooter by far.
Golson is the strongest, but no 3 balls and is not D1 long.
Geeter is probably the best all-around guy but is that saying much?
Randle still looks slow and lost although he is long and gets off the floor.
Billingsley has BB talent but is not a 5-position guy. When Stan went to the four-guard lineup, he rode the pine, presumably because of his lack of strength.
Pranger appeared to me as Thomas Binelli II, but that was just one game.

Honestly the aforementioned players bring back memories of Bud Jones, Jalen King, Nick Madray, Isaih Green, Baylee Steele, Binelli, etc... Good bench guys for sure.

Jerry, you and I typically have differing views of the talent level on the team. And I respect that. But, I really want to revisit the game film of Bud Jones. I remember him as a very promising young front court player that transferred out prematurely. But I don’t really remember why I thought that?

The season has been over for nearly 2 weeks and there has been no portal activity for EMU players. Is this a sign that everyone is staying?

Some may wait until winter semester ends. Ditto football.

I would think that any transfers want to be headed to the portal and talking to other schools.

I would also assume the players want to know by the end of semester where they'll be next year

Regardless if our current players are good or not, nobody better is going to come in. If this last year was just a bad season, maybe not a big deal. But it was well publicized what talent was brought in, even before Emoni Bates committed. Both MLive and Detroit News ran an article about having lured in 3 former Mr Basketball runner ups- this was big considering EMU never gets articles. Any reasonably informed recruit is going to be aware of this and wary of the situation.

EMU’s best hope is part for the development of current players (perhaos considerable development) and part a change of scheme/strategy by the coaching staff (perhaps considerable change). And with some reasonable success next year, future recruiting should be fine.

I tend to agree but for guys like Luka and Randle there may be greener pastures. And they haven't used their free transfer year.

Luka should by all means transfer if he wants to play basketball. He is a very good fundamental player but Noah, Acuff, Lovejoy and Rice are more athletic. He could tear it up at a lower level or find a better fit elsewhere at a mid-major.

Ramy, you hit a bullseye on the EMU sports coverage, it is incredibly minimal. Unfortunately, as well it is uniformed. Celebrate the Michigan Mr. Basketball runner-up? The last impactful NCAA prospect winning the award was Isiah Livers way back in 2017. Last year's winner went to nationally renowned SVSU and someone would brag about getting the runner-up?

‘79, I am curious why you would mention those two and not Lovejoy? Lovejoy has the best prospects to transfer out. (Again, hoping he doesn’t).

Jerry, great point on the relevance of the Mr Basketball trophy- or lack thereof with regard to college prospects. And humorously stated at that. However, I do want to point out that EMU’s Mr Basketball runner ups were actually recruited by Big East schools- if that makes a difference.

Randle may see the chalk writing on the blackboard and see even less minutes if we bring an experienced big man in. Luka isn't going to see an uptick in minutes with the back court as it is. Lovejoy got significant playing time as a true frosh. Right now he could be a big fish in a small pond if he stays. But honestly who knows what goes through these players minds? There is only one basketball and so many minutes in a game. They can't all be superstars.

Let’s hope we have a turn over of the roster that includes players with desire on offense and to play defense.

Stan is out if he wins under 10 games.

I'm the opposite and want everyone to stay. There's something to be said for stability. Fill the open roster spot with a sold big man and let it ride.
