I was used to "travel partner" series where your school would host two teams on a Thursday & Saturday or your school would go visit to other schools that where local to each other on a Thursday & Saturday. Then you would have the Partners have a home & home weekend. I found that fun having these basketball weekends and very predictable.

I just looked at our schedule. It's very unpredictable.

I'll propose these Partner Schools:
JMU & ODU
App & Marshall
Ga Southern & Coastal
Ga State & Troy
USA & USM
ULM & UL
ASU & Tx State
San Marcos to Jonesboro 671 miles
San Marcos to Lafayette 325 miles

Jonesboro to Monroe 304 miles

Our partner was previously UTA at 232 miles. There are no real viable options now.

Sounds like it's time to dump you guys on CUSA and bring in LA Tech then! 03-lmfao

But seriously, maybe what we've got now is the best option and just will take some getting used to for the new members. Seems like everything that felt like a good idea to any of us and was thrown out there gets a "we've tried that, it sucked" so unless it'd just work better now with this 14 then it seems like the conference has already worked their way through the best options. It's not like anything will be totally perfect and not like the current setup is terrible or anything. It just would be nice if it was easier for the people who like to watch/attend every game for both basketball programs.

RE: Not a fan of the current Basketball schedule
I remember before Coastal, the Sun Belt one year did basketball travel partners in an 11 team league. App was the lone team out, meaning every Thursday opponent didn't play Saturday and every Saturday opponent didn't play Thursday.

They did Saturday/Monday for WBB one year and there were complaints about lost class time. Same with Wednesday/Saturday WBB.

In 2014, the schedule theme was "equitable travel," so a team would do something like play at home Thursday, on the road a plane trip away Saturday, then back home on Monday against a team that didn't play on Saturday. It was so ridiculous that one time, App played at Arkansas State, then had to return home two days later to host Louisiana. The Cajuns, despite their bus breaking down, got to App well before the App team.

Pure WBB/MBB doubleheaders playing the same teams the entire season? Done it. Fans and coaches felt like it was too high school-ish.

Add on the fact that MBB coaches are some of the biggest divas and the Sun Belt had their fare share of em.

That might give me a reason to get back to the east coast of Virginia; which I haven't been to since 1982.
At the time, my brother was stationed at Norfolk and we purposefully stopped to see them on our way to Texas.
When he got out, in 1989, he moved to Dallas.

Likely this is what happens with us. Right now we're kind of stuck in 2 minds of what is more important overall, travel partners or playing everyone in your division twice?

As the league gets used to each other, we'll likely make a decision of what we like best. I think a lot of the present set up is because we're trying to grow division rivalries and worrying about the rest later. Maybe later we decide its best to protect 1 or 2 important rivalries for each team and letting the other opponents we play twice a year rotate, or we decide that 20 league games is better, and one team plays a designated team from the opposite division twice.

There are a lot of options for sure.

RE: Not a fan of the current Basketball schedule
What we have now works for the first year or two I think.

On a different angle, I could see a benefit to leaving some open dates for dynamic scheduling later in the season rather than automatically playing teams twice.

Play everyone once, then midway thru the season match up teams based on record/standings/NET in a way that gives the top teams a way to boost their NET. This could help the SBC land that elusive 2nd tourney bid.

Believe there is already something like this being put in place for matchups with the MAC-SBC challenge, and think I've heard of other conferences adjusting schedules this way also.

that falls apart unless same teams play home/away on same week - that's unrealistic ... it also would potentially/unfairly skew the tourney seeding ...

IMO, it all has to be done on the front end ... and best I can figgle, there's no reason the SBC can't have an interconference tourney in December to replace the inability to schedule quality OOC games ... somebody else posted that posit (sorry, can't remember who) a week or so ago ... the more I think about it, the more I like that option in our current schema...

Well, our softball is not immediately adjacent to baseball, but it is within easy walking distance. Actually, all of our venues are in the same area, and there is also a school-owned Hilton Garden Inn right across the street from the complex, which is very nice.

The only outlier is the volley ball venue, which is located in the historic but recently renovated EKL Gymnasium located on our main campus, which about 1.5 miles away from the athletic complex.

CUSA tried that, and it never accomplished anything besides creating a giant PITA for everybody.

We don’t need scheduling gymnastics. We need to man up and play better.
