RE: *** Basketball Gamethread (2/5- 2/9) ***

Temple improves to 13-7 (6-3) with a 67-58 home win vs. Tulsa. The story of the game was that the Owls' leading scorer (Dunn; 35 mpg, 19 ppg in AAC games) played 8 fewer minutes than usual due to foul trouble, permitting Tulsa to keep it close until the last few minutes of the game.
Dunn scored 11, 8 below average, but (F) Nick Jourdain picked up the slack, and led the team to victory (15 pts, 12 rbs, 2 blks, 1 ast, 1 stl).
Three other Temple guards contributed 13, 13, and 9 pts, making this one of the games with the most balanced scoring this season.
The Owls also did a good job of managing their possessions, and made twice as many assists as TOs.
Temple has won 6 of their last 7 and 12 of their last 176 games. They have - very unexpectedly - won a higher % of their games since their leading scorer had a season-ending foot injury in game #7.
The Owls haven't scored a lot of points this season, so they've had to win games by playing well on defense. They have won 11 of the 12 games in which they've scored 65+ points, and they have a 9-0 record vs. opponents that have scored fewer than 65 points.
. . . . . . .
The Owls are now almost certain to finish the season with a >.500 record, for the first time since Coach McKie took the helm. The fact that the five leading players on the team are all true, RS, or covid freshmen suggests that he has achieved an important milestone in rebuilding the program.
Although the team currently sits in 3rd place in the AAC, raising NIT hopes among some fans, they have games scheduled vs. SMU, @ UH, @ Memphis, @ Cincy and a home/away series vs. resurgent Tulane. Thus, most prognosticators predict that they'll finish the season with 16 or 17 regular season wins.
A first-round win (potentially, their 18th win) in the AAC tourney might get them an invitation to play in the CBI, and such a young team with a still-new Head Coach would probably be well-advised to accept an invitation if it comes.
Notably, USF received an invitation to play in the 2019 CBI after winning 18 games. They went on to win the CBI tournament championship.
