Tulane are very quietly 7-4 in AAC play. This makes me angrier about nonconference play.

Tulane and Temple are definitely the two most on the rise.

Tulane is getting progressively better too. Confidence building. Glad we got you at Fogelman when we did.

.

Temple improves to 13-7 (6-3) with a 67-58 home win vs. Tulsa. The story of the game was that the Owls' leading scorer (Dunn; 35 mpg, 19 ppg in AAC games) played 8 fewer minutes than usual due to foul trouble, permitting Tulsa to keep it close until the last few minutes of the game.

Dunn scored 11, 8 below average, but (F) Nick Jourdain picked up the slack, and led the team to victory (15 pts, 12 rbs, 2 blks, 1 ast, 1 stl).

Three other Temple guards contributed 13, 13, and 9 pts, making this one of the games with the most balanced scoring this season.

The Owls also did a good job of managing their possessions, and made twice as many assists as TOs.

Temple has won 6 of their last 7 and 12 of their last 176 games. They have - very unexpectedly - won a higher % of their games since their leading scorer had a season-ending foot injury in game #7.

The Owls haven't scored a lot of points this season, so they've had to win games by playing well on defense. They have won 11 of the 12 games in which they've scored 65+ points, and they have a 9-0 record vs. opponents that have scored fewer than 65 points.

. . . . . . .

The Owls are now almost certain to finish the season with a >.500 record, for the first time since Coach McKie took the helm. The fact that the five leading players on the team are all true, RS, or covid freshmen suggests that he has achieved an important milestone in rebuilding the program.

Although the team currently sits in 3rd place in the AAC, raising NIT hopes among some fans, they have games scheduled vs. SMU, @ UH, @ Memphis, @ Cincy and a home/away series vs. resurgent Tulane. Thus, most prognosticators predict that they'll finish the season with 16 or 17 regular season wins.

A first-round win (potentially, their 18th win) in the AAC tourney might get them an invitation to play in the CBI, and such a young team with a still-new Head Coach would probably be well-advised to accept an invitation if it comes.

Notably, USF received an invitation to play in the 2019 CBI after winning 18 games. They went on to win the CBI tournament championship.

UCF basketball broke ECU basketball in comeback fashion the same way UCF football broke ECU football on the Hail Mary in 2014.

Why is their non conference record so awful? ECU and Tulane should trade non conference records.

Dooley was a bad idea from the start, never good idea to go back to a ex. This team has quit you can see it on the floor, after Arizona State fires Bobby Hurley we should go get him.

Tulane at Memphis is going to be a testy little game. We've won there before but it was a shock game where they fell asleep. It feels different heading into this one.

Uh, it’s only 14 minutes into the game. If WSU shoots 80% from 3 in the first half, that means they’re gonna shoot 5% in the second.

Bates is out.

If I recall correctly, the Tigers were down to seven players last time they played UCF. I hope the reinforcements produce a favorable outcome for Memphis.

That was 2015, Conroy's 2nd to last team. In the rematch, Memphis beat us at the buzzer in Smoothie King (Austin, maybe? A really good player, but I think he transferred from Memphis after the season). They also won in Cincy that year. 6 league wins. We've had players come through here; just couldn't coach them nor keep them.

That sounds like that Josh Pastner math...

RE: *** Basketball Gamethread (2/5- 2/9) ***
This is my "How to Fix Wichita" to be atourney team next season

1) lose qua grant or porter. (or you can keep all but 1 becomes deep bench) - they arent bad, but we need to make room for 1 guard in the rotation, both are good but not indispensable

2) get a guard with legitimate scoring abiliy, and handles/ agility to beat defenders (wichita has shown its capable of landing such players - etienne, grant sherfield types)

--- a major weakness is the ability to create shots on great d, on a regular basis

3) this will be big one- get udeze to transfer out- no new player will ever jump him with what he has done, but his presence ensures Wichita will be undersized

4) get a legitimate 5 with size, 6'10+ can atleast defend and rebound-- scoring is a plus not necessity w/ pohto.. then rotate that big between pohto depending on matchup (offensive or defensive need)

--- wichita is undersized at the 4 and 5, should at least gett size at the 5

5) teaching Etienne what is a smart shot..

i think Wichita is a tourney team with those 5 steps..and i dont think too much for 1 offseason

.

The loss @ WSU could actually help SMU if it motivates them to beat Houston on their home floor, Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Tigers shoot ahead of UCF, 13-3 on their home floor.
