UCF/Florida Bowl Game brings in monster pre-Christmas TV Ratings for ESPN
On rivalry weekend, the FSU vs UF Football game on ESPN drew a nationwide audience of 1.69 Million.

The pre-Christmas UCF vs UF Bowl Game that went head to head with a NFL Game drew almost DOUBLE the FSU/UF number:

Instant way to discredit anyone who uses that excuse. Florida was hyped. Plenty of players said it before the game, they’re making a statement for Napier, their transfers stayed to play in this game, it was a sold out and loud crowd, a hard-hitting battle, and ended with punches thrown at the back of the helmet of a UCF player after the game. They just got beat.

For the first time since Boise State and Bethune Cookman, we were relatively healthy and stayed healthy for a whole game. Of course we were still without QB1, RB1, WR1, LB1, LB2, and DT1 overall, but the guys we did have on the field were all near 100%. What a year.

It was a great game to watch. It was obvious both sides were really into it. My main takeaway is non-NY6 bowls need to try to setup more regional/rivalry matchups. Unfortunately, conference tie-ins kind of limit how often that can be done.

That’s a much bigger rating I expected. Wow. Keep adding ammo for the Big 12 contract

Good to know. At 3.2M that ranks in top bowls played so far.

Hopefully the tv ratings, attendance and media buzz proves the series should continue.

2021 Florida In-State TV Ratings:

UCF/UF 3.201M
UF/FSU 1.629M
UF/usf 1.597M
FSU/Miami 1.534M

I didn't realize the UF/usf outperformed the FSU/Miami game.

03-shhhh I don't talk about that one... It was pretty bad comparatively.

I feel like most fans checked out on a 2-10 usf by the end of season

UCF/usf 0.771M

0.771 is on pace with your average AAC matchup. However the series has had a lot better viewership in years past.

FIFY.

In 2021, 20 AAC intra-conference games that were rated averaged 904,750 viewers.

Good showing. It ties the 3.2M that watched the UAB-BYU game.

I think it helped that the NFL game we were up against was NFL network.

That's impressive. BYU has a strong national following.

Yes.
I would add "only" to NFL Network.
Most Thursday night NFL games have been on an OTA network PLUS NFL Network. Typically, NFLN gets a couple million, while the network broadcast doubles or triples what that NFLN-only game got.

That's not to say that the 3.2 million viewers isn't a very good number. We can find several bowls NOT autonomy vs autonomy in the same neighborhood (e.g. Navy-Kansas State Liberty Bowl), but I don't see too many PRE-Christmas.
That plus a sold-out NFL stadium PRE-Christmas is very good.

(Let's just not try to make it more than it is, i.e. I personally wouldn't have used "monster" as a descriptor.)

I found it really impressive that despite all of the injuries this year, UCF still finished 3rd overall in a strong conference. Says a lot about the program, and made me wonder what could have been if y'all were healthy

While that would be ideal...with some bowl games far out west (WVU played in a baseball stadium last night in Phoenix) and almost no bowls played up north...you can't have that many regional bowls where both visiting fan bases can easily drive to.

NOTE: Now the Charlotte Mayo bowl with UNC vs South Carolina is a very good "local" regional matchup...with both schools just 2-3 hrs away and Charlotte the biggest city with tons of alumni of both schools.

BYU/UAB had 2 great things going for it:

1) It was on ABC

2) The NFL Game it was suppose to go against that Saturday afternoon was postponed to Monday because of Covid..so the Independence Bowl ended up being the lone game on broadcast TV.
