It's less about not being able to afford football than it is simply choosing what to prioritize and where they want to be long term (remember that the school that "doesn't have two nickels to rub together" is voluntarily writing an eight-figure check to go play their preferred schools) . I can't stress this enough - it's just different in New England. College football is a sideshow to pro football that functionally only exists on TV screens, and college basketball is the bigger deal up here. Football was never meant to be the headliner - it was elevated only because UConn saw a split coming and wanted to stick with BC and Syracuse (which, by the way, should show you how genuine the whole "public land-grant" spiel from the UConn Football Truthers is). Once that didn't happen, and other big revenue avenues didn't pan out, lots and lots of people started giving the football program the side-eye.
Here's the thing though: going to UConn football games can still be a lot of fun! I had season tickets all four years I was there (back in the OBE days) and enjoyed it. It just shouldn't be the focus of the administration any more. If they continue on as an independent in some capacity I'll still go to games and wish the program well. Being a football school's never going to happen though, which is probably bizarre to people down south.
Dude, you think Basketball isn’t Big elsewhere? I live in NC, you know, Tobacco Road. And it is isn’t just the 4 ACC schools. Good grief they had high school playoffs at Minges this year, Greene Central and Farmville Central played in the 2A Eastern regional final. Minges was 100 tickets from a sell out 7,900.
RE: SIR article detailing 12 reasons UConn’s move was a bad one
Thought I read that UCONN has until 2022 to move their programs to the BE in an article where they will pay $30 million if they move to a P5 within 5 years after joining. They also cannot put their football with a P5 conference either. If Conn stays in the AAC for at least 2 of those years to keep their FB there (because its getting kicked out when they go) someone might see the light (doubt it) and reverse this dream show and keep UCONN in the AAC when their current President goes. She's done with in a year anyway. Just a thought not saying it will be so. Just saying UConn has up to 3 years from now to get buyer's remorse and stay. They better hurry though because Aresco and the conference presidents and AD'S are already looking for their replacement right now.
RE: SIR article detailing 12 reasons UConn’s move was a bad one
I think the reports of up to $3 million travel savings upon move to the BE is exaggerated. Seven of the BE schools are over 200 miles away and five are over 400 miles away from Storrs.

Memphis is more basketball then football....which is not the norm in the South.
Good luck!

Not to get into a football vs basketball argument, as I love both Tiger football (Tiger football first fan) and Tiger basketball, I know quite a few Tiger fans, including myself that would disagree with this statement.

Agreed. Not to mention that it’s a drop in the bucket at the end of the day. If their deficit is accurate.

Reading comprehension. What I said was that college football matters way less in New England than it does in most other parts of the country, not anything about whether other people like basketball too. Other folks can like basketball plenty, it's not going to make college football more popular up here.
