I wish it wasn't getting as popular as it is. I was planning on retiring there. I figured I could show those N.C. locals how to drop some smoke on a shoulder or ribs. 02-13-banana

I am a big fan of the mustard/vinegar based BBQ sauce. This is a pretty good one if you like that stuff. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/19615/best-...eat-sauce/

Any of you N.C. guys let me know if you have anything better.

Mustard is not BBQ Sauce.

Preach! Mustard belongs on a cheese burger along with chili and onions.

Superfluous! An American hamburger only needs mustard, onions, and cold lettuce.

The article uses the Tenn-Ark-Miss metro area not just the city.

I just saw data showing the Memphis metro area increased in growth from 2010 to 2017. Didn't save the link, though. Not by a lot, but a definite increase.

Mustard is not BBQ Sauce.
Ketchup with a bunch of sugar isn't flavor, which is what most of the popular BBQ sauces are. People who put that on meat are the same ones who ruin good bourbon with coke.

Not a huge fan of mayonnaise, but I will give the bama white sauce a go just to see what its like. Never heard of it until a bit ago.

I don't know of anyone who uses a tomato based sauce that is "ketchup with a bunch of sugar", unless you're talking about some Kraft product which no one who is at all serious about BBQ would use.

My favorite BBQ sauce of all time was at a long closed Memphis place called The Three Pigs on Highland Avenue. It was tomato based, but also peppery and a bit vinegary though I'm sure it had a bit of sugar in there somewhere. But it wasn't sweet.

Memphis compared to Wichita and Hartford isn't a good comparison either.
Its more of a statement for people to be leaving those much smaller town like cities than our metropolis.

Metropolis Memphis (#42, 1.35 Mil)
Small Town Hartford (#47, 1.2 Mil)

I honestly didn't realize Hartford's population was that size wow.
I was implying Memphis was much bigger than the other two but I stand my ground on Hartford. Wichita is the big difference. Theres also little to nothing once you leave Wichita city limits.

I went to Big Bob Gibson's in Decatur, AL. They specialize in the white sauce. It's great on BBQ chicken.

That's weird at s time when most center cities are attracting people especially young folks.

Mostly because the suburban towns can now have their own schools that are independent of the Shelby County Schools which was formerly Memphis City schools, but they surrendered their charter to force a merger with the much better performing SCS. It took some folks in Nashville changing state laws (thank God for TN being so heavily Republican) to allow the suburbs to get their own schools. Now, the burbs are booming and the property values are going up. The SCS schools are still awful and the crime is much lower in the suburbs than the city. I moved out in 2002 and immediately got annexed back in. Moved out again in 2009 and now live where I can never be annexed. They say never say never, but I can 100% say for certain that I will never live inside the city limits again. Ever.

That place made me fat in college as my apartment was a block away. Ok, beer helped also.

The woman sat there all day chopping BBQ.

This is accurate as it appears it would be single people leaving since the birth rate makes up the difference enough for a net gain.

This is the opposite of the current trend in urban centers through out the western world, not just America, although it is greatest and most easily seen in the western and southern cities of the United States.

Tons of people have moved to central city Memphis, particularly downtown, in the past 20 or so years. Hell, I remember old office buildings being redeveloped into apartments back in the 70s. If anything, I always thought downtown Memphis was ahead of the national trend. Blocks and blocks of formerly vacant land in the South Main area are now condos and apartments. Downtown's resident population is 26,000. Midtown Memphis full of anything from mansions to shotguns has always been a stable area with a large middle-class, but has alsoseen a lot of growth in recent years.

The problem with Memphis' urban core are the poverty areas to the north and south surrounding those two growth areas which lost their industrial base decades ago and never recovered.

Edit: just for fun I googled wiki for the downtown pops of Dallas and Houston--they're both a little over 11,000, less than half of Memphis, but with metro populations 4 to 5 times larger. So, when you talk of the urban core of Memphis, while much has declined, much is also as vibrant if not moreso than much larger cities.

We'll just ignore the fact that Memphis is basically Detroit Lite on basically any "top 50 worst cities in the US" or "top 10 highest crime cities in the US" list you care to point your google-fu compass towards. Because: #ButOurSuburbsAreReallyNeat, right? We'll just ignore all the stats that say Wichita has a lower unemployment rate, higher incomes, lower poverty, and a higher proportion of college graduates. The difference is big in some of those criteria.

And please with the big city bravado horse shart; metro Memphis is the size of OKC. Big effing deal! OMG!!! Gonna go home and plan a week's vaca to OKC, and then next month one to Memphis!!! We're going to be exposed to such urban sophisticates and cosmopolitan types!!!! #YOLO y'all!!

No one... exactly no one... in this country is lining up to move to or visit either town. Neither one is a vacation destination in the slightest sense. Neither is circled on the refrigerator of even one tragically hip millennial just about to graduate college.

My lord I don't even know why I'm even responding to you. You're like an internet embodiment of why maybe eugenics isn't really all THAT bad.
