Great players that made great coaches
This is a short list.

John Wooden
Steve Spurrior

The is a hockey coach too but I do not recall his name.

Most don't work out. The best case scenarios are as follows:

Fred Hoiberg
Steve Alford
Larry Krystkowiak

Larry Bird was a great coach. Lenny Wilkens was a great coach. Steve Kerr is a great coach. Steve Alford is a very good coach. Just a few off the top of my head. I'm sure there's many, many more.

Since 2000, there are only 35 coaches that have made the Final Four. There are 347 Div 1 teams in 1 year alone! It's extremely hard for anyone to be a great coach. No need to qualify it.

Lenny Wilkens is a 2 time hall of famer, as a player and a coach.

The only other two-time hall of famer I can think of?

The stylin, profilin, limousine ridin, jet flyin, kiss stealin, wheelin n dealin son of a gun.

Larry Finch did well.

As good or better than the above list that includes Alford. Alford has led ten teams to the NCAA tourney but has been coaching longer than Finch's 11 years with six tourneys. He has been coaching now for something like 23 seasons, and about 18 of those not at SWMO State.

Not sure about the other great player part.

Was Bobby Knight a great player at Ohio State?

That's because a lot of baseball players grow up to be coaches.

Most successful NBA players retire, set for life.

So there are really not that many successful star Bassetball players who even wanted or tried to be a coach.

Penny is unique in his desire to give back to the community in a hands-on way..

RE: Great players that made great coaches
It does make sense why the list would be short.

Great players more often play professionally. While that is great experience, it is not coaching.

Less than great players simply more often get into coaching younger. While there are certainly exceptions, it seems too logical.

An edge Penny would have is he has been coaching for a bit, although not with the experience level that say, a Tony Madlock has gotten. Because Madlock got into coaching sooner.

I think there are far more coaches who were former players than most people realize...
